The game saves at multiple points:
It will save your character every time you switch to a different room/map, or exit the game. The game also saves the character whenever the "world" save happens.
The game also make a "back up" save for your character that happens every hour, in case something happens with the normal saves. It will also make a "latest" back up save when a regular save happens as a different file.
The game saves the "world" in a separate save for your character, whenever an objective is changed, and when exiting the game. It also creates a back up world saves as well every hour, just like the character back ups.
So to summarize it, the game saves very often whenever you're doing something, even as simple as just switching maps, and it has two back up saves. One back up as recent as the main save, and another that happens every hour.
These saves are separated with a "character" save file (your stats, items, equips, skills, etc) and a "world" save file (what quests are done, what treasures have been looted, story line progress), usually tied to that character.
If the regular save file doesn't work for some reason, the latest "back up" can be used.
If the latest back up can't be used for some reason, then an hourly back up can be used, and these are backlogged over time for multiple hours, in case something went *very* wrong.
All of these are also compatible with Steam Cloud, just in case.
Arcade saves whenever you start or finish a run, although I'm not sure if it saves on exiting to main menu.
