Handicap goes down when I play worse?
Some how my handicap was calculated 2.8. I noticed when I played a crappy game my handicap would go DOWN. After a couple of rounds, I figured I would play so my scores were around 40 over par. My last round which was just before I posted this, was a 130. I deliberately did this. What does it tell me? My handicap went from 2.8 to 2.3 ! I play real golf and I would not be playing if the handicap was calculated as the worse you play, the lower the handicap?

I cannot believe this has not happened to anyone else?

A + handicap in this game means that strokes will be added against your score. This is why it goes down if you play poorly and raises when you play well. It confuses me as well.

Man .. I did not know I was that good :) .. Thanks for the info Skid.

The algorithm seems to work logically for me. I've played my way from a -15 to a -6 by steadily improving. When I play a weak round on a handicap course, it goes up a little (i.e. to a higher negative value) and when I play better than usual, my handicap numbers reflect this, granting me fewer free strokes on qualified courses I then go on to play.

I must admit I'm very confused about it but I'll just let it do it's thing without deliberately scoring bad, I'm sure it works as it should as Strummer explained.

Well there may well be anomalies. I'm not saying it's perfect. There have been previous complaints similar to yours.

This is a great post one of our community members did. This might help with understanding how handicaps are calculated in the first 20 rounds and then how they are always changing after that.

I was in a tournement and had a handicap of +3. My first round I had a +7 over par and my handicap changed to +4, (Yes went up, [didn't realise I was improving lol]). Another player I was with had a starting Handicap of -6 and scored a round of 6 under par and his Handicap didn't change, (it didn't change after 3 consecutive sub par rounds, (-6, -7, -5 and they were still handicapped at -6).

This was in a UK Pro-Am tourney.

Is this a bug or were they cheating somehow. The other 2 players were similar to me in scoring.

Also, I played a round on one course and the leader had a final round score of -52 after 18 holes. They had a handicap of -48 and obviously played a round of -4 giving them -52. This is obviously wrong, but the top 8 places on this course and most others had players with -48 handicaps. This really needs to be sorted. It's either a bug or exploit ot outright cheating, but it needs to be looked at and can be verified by looking at just about any individual course, (this the one I played recently was Great Tottington).

I had a handicap of -1.7 (rounded to -2) and was really pleased with my actual round of 70, giving me a -4 agregate, and then my handicap was changed to +2.8, (rounded to +3). Like I said I was really happy until I saw the leaderboard with -52, (that's the same as 15 hole in one's, plus 2 albatrosses and an eagle on the par 5s........in one round).....

This is why I have stopped joining tournaments. I knew beforehand that it would be mismanaged, be full of sandbaggers etc. One is wiser to start a private league of friends and set private tournaments. Otherwise it is a crapshoot to find fairness.

I ran tournaments at chess.com. They were set with a skill rating range. I was one of the only one's I saw pulling people who went 100 above the skill range. I posted it in the tourney rules that I would be doing this to keep the matches fair. Far too often someone would be a couple of points below the cusp just to clean up when the tourny was launched. This is the PROPER way to ran tournaments with skill ratings. If this club you are in would remove the sandbaggers, then they would be running it properly. If not, well....

Hey guys - we are looking in to this but, just as an FYI, tournament creators can set limits on both sides. They can say you have to be above this number, below this number, or both when creating tournaments.

Just finished my first Tournement and started with a H/C of +2.8 and scored 73, 70, 84 and 86 and at the end they said my handicap had been changed due to IMPROVEMENT to 3.0....Improvement, ha ha ha ha ha ......

The utter rubbish I scored in the last two rounds was mainly down to the crapshoot game of putting. This really needs something, I don't know what, to make it work better, especially for the novice like me. A toggleable % meter would be helpful, so we could see when pulling back the putter just how far % wise we were pulling it. It could also be disabled in certain tournement if needed. It would just help a great deal for players like myself.

I've had this game for a long time now, and have played it on and off since buying it because of the putting difficulty. I have adjusted and, NOT MASTERED but, improved a lot in all the other areas but not once on the green.

A small change would make this a fantastic game instead of a frustrating game. I could also ignore the other 'faults' ( as in other players super low scores ).

Hey vipasoft - not sure if this will help or not, but I wrote a Putting How-to: {LINK REMOVED}

In it talkas about judging the power of your backswing. Also, Do you know that you can change cameras so that you can look down on your golfer while putting? That might make it easier for you to judge power. But read the How-to and see if it helps. Personally, I use the golfer's back foot as my fixed point to judge how far to pull back.

MC1_Judge Jan 30, 2015 @ 1:25am
Thanks Lorin, I did read that. I didn't know you could look down on the golfer though. How do I do that. I'm playing on PS4? Is it that L3/R3 cycle camera or am I missing something else.
76561198136027797 Jan 30, 2015 @ 4:58am
So it depends if you swing with the left stick or right. But...when on the green, press the circle button to go in to the putting camera. Once in the putting camera, you can press down (click) in your non-swing analog stick (so L3 or R3). that will cycle through the 'Putting camera' just the way you can with all other cameras. Once you have the overhead view, press down (click) on the swing you use for your swing (L3 or R3). That will enable swinging in that camera and now you can swing like normal. Hope that helps. If you forget which buttons, just look in the bottom right of the screen for button prompts.
