Best Golf Game on PC ?
2016 and I have been taking a look back on some of the best golf games I have played over the years on PC, taking everything into account such as physics, realism, graphics courses, career, gameplay and atmosphere etc , which golf game do you think is the best all rounder ? Links 2003 ? Tiger Woods 08 ? The Master 2012 ? or is it the Golf Club ?

Do you think the EA Sports console games are better than what is currently available on PC ?

Just wanted to get some feedback from you guys.. Thx

Hi Bob, at the 80s and 90s (I guess) Links was the best Golf game - in my opinion.
These days there are two interesting Golf games on the market (I only play on PC) :

1. Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf
2. The Golf Club

There were both on my list and I decided to buy "The Golf Club" because of the last price reduction. Till now I don't repent the 13 Euros - it's a real good game and I enjoy playing almost every day.

Greetings from Germany

Hi Falcon, thx for your reply , have you played TW08 ? I just recently went back to play it after a few years away from golf games , I must say it has a ton of good features , although I'm enjoying TGC it does feel very basic at the moment (4hrs played) in comparison to TW08 , sadly there are too few choices for PC Golf games , I have added Perfect golf to my wishlist.

Thank you and greetings from Scotland :d:

Hi Bob,
no, I havn't played TW08 bat you are absolutely right ... there are much to few Golf games on the market. Is TW more extensive then TGC? I thought it's to old to compare it with JNPG and TGC, or am I false?
Scotland? GREAT location ............... !

Hi Falcon , TW08 is in my opinion still one of the best if not the best Golf game on PC , it may be an older game with cartoon like GFX but it still looks good maxed out on a modern PC , the Game is very detailed and indepth, every aspect of the game has been well thought out , it offers so much more in terms of career building to character unlocks, equipment and much more, you start off as an amatuer and progress at your own pace, physics are really good, the game allows you to become good very quickly on the easier level difficulty but requires practice on the higher difficulty.

You can import golf courses from previous titles such as 07-06 so it has a lot of nice courses to play.IMHO it is a masterpiece and produced at a time when games were still great value for money. A must buy Falcon , especially if your a Golf Nut lol :d:

Yeah Scotland lots of golf courses lol , pity am not that good at all IRL (Y)

Hi Bob,
hmmm ... just watched a sample youtube video:

Sorry, I have to say that I still don't like the graphics. That was the reason why I only listed the two games above. The graphics engine is one of the most important features that has to be state of the art, if a game wants to survive - especially golf. I'm very pleased with TGC, eventually I wll buy JNPG if there is another sale ... ;)

Unfortunately I never played golf in Scotland (neither Irland) and I don't exped to do so ... but I keep my fingers crossed .... you'll never know! ;)

Yeah , like I said the game does have cartoon like GFX , I know it is not realistic but the game design, content and physics are top notch especially the camera work , hopefully TGC 2 when it is released will have much more to offer.

Edit: Obviously if you ever do get the chance it just has to be St Andrews :D

Links LS with powerstroke remains my favourite PC representation of the game of golf - tough to make a decent score but a great sense of satisfaction when you did.

My computer golf days date back to a late 1970s textual representation running on a PDP of some sort, then moving to an Atari ST on which I played a lot of both (World Class) Leaderboard (Access) and Mean 18 (Accolade), which went on to become the dominant franchises of the 1990s (as Links and Jack Nicklaus respectively). I also have fond recollections of an odd golf title on the ST from Microprose, which implemented one or two features which still don't get handled well by far more recent representations, such as a restricted backswing based on the position of objects around you (in 3D, which was impressive for the early 90s).

I moved from the ST to a PC almost solely in order to be able to play Links whenever I wanted to (I had already bought a copy to play at lunchtimes on a work PC) and watched that franchise develop whilst also tinkering with PGA Tour (EA, later to become Tiger Woods), the PGA Golf franchise from Sierra and The Golf Pro games (Empire) none of which caught my imagination like Links continued to do.

I lost interest once Links went down the pan and EA took the decision that no one played sports games on the PC so I cannot really comment on PC golf over the past decade, but a random search of Steam one afternoon turned up The Golf Club and I've been quite taken with it so far, flaws and all. Still a long way to go to match what the Links franchise was doing over a decade ago, but good luck to HB Studios with that.

Atari ST, Microprose, Accolade, ... hmmmm, I remember that good old days! :D
Ok, graphics were lousy, but no one cares ... there was'nt anything better. ;)

Thanks for your reply "The Pitts", Glad your enjoying The Golf Club, I think it is overall a good representation of the game too, I hope that TGC 2 offers more in the way of content such as a career progression system with more depth, something along the lines of the Tiger Woods games, which are in my opinion a good template for an immersive golf experience.

I agree with you about EA dropping the ball with Golf games on PC , that was a total surprise at the time , especially as they had almost perfected the genre, TW golf games on PC in my opinion are still the benchmark for all golf games , No other game has come close in terms of gameplay, learning curve, physics and in general game design,

EA have went on to produce some top notch Golf games on console, TW 11/12 are pretty awesome games to be honest.. I just wish we had more Titles here on PC.

So yeah I will be supporting TGC & JNPG, I hope they progress and take the game to the next level on PC.

Yeah I remember , I had one of those , but my first computer was a Grandstand 2000, the spectrum came later , then a commodore which was my first chess PC.
I like 'TGC', always have, always will.

As with all games, you need to customise it to suit your needs, the 'Games Developers' aren't mind readers.

I have a top end gaming PC, and I have every setting on maximum and it works a treat.

For those of you with a 'Lesser Spec' macchines it's about playing around with settings until the you find the settings that suit your machine.

It takes a while, but it's worth it, once you have it sorted I think you will enjoy it a lot more.
