Zoom Player Steam Edition

Zoom Player Steam Edition

Can this play back at 60 fps?
splash player pro and smooth video project have set the bar with taking our 24-29 fps vids and playing them at 60 fps, I'm wondering while they were creating 300 functions if this is one of them,

Yes, Zoom Player can handle 60fps videos.

I think torrentula81 didn't mean videos which are encoded at 60 fps but rather some sort of motion interpolation which makes videos which are encoded at around 30 fps or lower look like true 60 fps videos by intelligently adding/interpolating frames. Like smooth video project.

Videos lower than 60 fps will always look a bit juddery on a 60 Hz screen due to the imperfect sync between video output and display resulting in irregularly duplicated/delayed frames if the source's refresh rate is lower than the display rate. I can instantly tell the difference between a 60 fps and non-60 fps video on all of my screens.

It would be a killer feature but it's really hard to implement, because it often distorts the image if the motion isn't recognized correctly.

Plus, motion interpolation usually costs ton of processing power.

A good alternative is madVR's "smooth motion" feature which doesn't do real motion interpolation but tries to make the video out sync perfectly to the display's rate.
This results in getting rid of the random micro-stutter you experience when watching <60 fps stuff.

Let's say you have a part of a scene in a video where some object is moving across the screen. If you watch this part several times, there will be times where the motion of the object slightly stutters if you track it with your eyes. But there will also be a bunch of times where it looks smooth. This depends on the sync between your video out and the screen at that specific moment and is totally random. I've had it happen with any major video player (MPC-HC, VLC, mplayer etc.) on any OS so far. This random micro-stutter usually lasts only a few seconds, while the connection is out of sync. Content below 60 fps will never play completely smooth from start to end on a 60Hz screen using the usual renderer.
madVR (with "smooth motion" on) is the only video renderer that get rids of that completely!

Would be nice to know if ZP has some similar feature.
(And sorry for the wall of text)

Yes, Zoom supports madVR, so you can use the Smooth Motion option in Zoom. Zoom itself does not have any built-in feature like this, but aside from madVR, you can also add DirectShow filters to the playback chain. So if there is some sort of filter that has this function - e.g. ffdshow - you can add that as a pre/post processor.

There is also the SmoothVideo Project (SVP) - I haven't tried it with Zoom myself, but it seems to be a sort of stand-alone utility that makes use of ffdshow to add this functionality to media players. ffdshow is actually an optional installation with Zoom Player via the Install Center application (which handles the downloading and updating of the codecs that Zoom Player relies on, such as ffdshow, LAV Filters, madVR etc), so SVP may work with Zoom as well. It would be interesting to see if anyone has already tried it.

MadVR does do image interpolation, it just mixes the frames based on what their relative position in the timeline is when the monitor refreshes.

It doesn't do motion interpolation, but that's kind of hard to do right in real time, even on powerful hardware.
so how can i play animes/movies in 60fps in Zoom Player latest version...

how can i see my live fps when i am playing stuff in zoom player?

noob here please advice...

Hi,

To check the FPS, open the Playing Information dialog (default "I" key). The field you want is "Actual FPS" (note that if you use madVR, sometimes this can be inaccurate - if you do use madVR, I would suggest opening its OSD - Ctrl+J - and checking the 'movie' field). 60FPS videos are nothing special - they should just play.

madVR is fine. All you have to do is to literally open the video files in Zoom - there is nothing special Zoom itself needs to do in order to support 60FPS. As long as you have a display that is capable of at least 60Hz, the video decoder (likely you will be using LAV Video) and video renderer (madVR) will take care of the rest. Zoom (or madVR's OSD) will tell you if the video is playing at an actual 60FPS (though you should be able to tell this yourself, 60FPS is noticeably different to say 30FPS, especially when it comes to movement). If you are having troubles, what specific problem are you having with 60FPS videos?

no problems with 60FPS i guess...but in my thread in ur forums i stated my problem maybe u can elaborate further. :} ty kindly.

Yes, I remember that thread. The problem with madVR seeking is not something I have seen personally as I mentioned - you would need to ask madshi (the madVR dev) about it. The best way to do that is via the madVR thread on Doom9:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228

It could be a problem with the decoder (LAV Video) - some people have reported slowness in seeking WMV files specifically with LAV and that is something for the LAV developer to fix - but I would start with the video renderer first.

I think your problem with EVR not showing subtitles is either video driver related or subtitle renderer related (using EVR, you would have been using xyVSFilter). My guess is the latter - when you use madVR, you are still using the same video driver, but you are using a different subtitle renderer (XYSubFilter). In this case all you could do is to ask cyberbeing (project manager for both xyVSFilter and XYSubFilter) about it and see if he can offer any assistance:
