The economy is really unbalanced now so i guess the devs didnt want people to simply buy all resources.
I assume the traders are coming in the next patch with events tied to them.
I havent done the math but you need to sell stuff worth about 30.000 corks to finish the quests
the only difference is how they buy basic resources, the price vary from 1 to 4 for iron/wood/plastic
And a little extra resources never hurt.
I make most of my Corks with selling wood for 4 at some Traders, for now that's the only reason for me to visit them from time to time, but all in all they are useless! Maybe not so useless as Workshops, I still don't get why they are there!?
