Converting damage question
So have a skill that converts physical to lightning damage (60%). If i went and got only physical damage increases on the tree, would the lightning damage benefit? Does the increase to physical damage on the tree happen before or after the conversion?

Good question. Maybe holding shift in passive tree and hovering over a passive tell you something?

no.
damage is only boosted once.
conversion happens before damage is boosted.
extra damage is added after damage is boosted, and therefore is not boosted itself.

So if your converting 60% of physical damage to lighting that's 40% physical and 60% lighting. Only the 40% would benefit from the physical damage increase.

This is one of the reasons I wish there was (as and option) damage numbers. I can see what is taking place just by looking at the numbers.

This was the case in POE1 bc there were people converting physical to lightning to cold to fire to chaos.

It was ridiculous.

The physical damage would be increased before the conversion to lightning.

Yes, in effect you would be doing more lightning damage.

Percentage increases to lightning or elemental damage would increase the damage after it is converted to lightning.

is there a definitive answer? there's 2 different answers lol. seems more people are saying the conversion happens before the increased damage nodes.

In PoE1 we did indeed benefit from both dmg increases. But here in PoE2 you only benefit from dmg increases after the conversion. You can even check it out yourself, ingame, if you hold ALT on something that converts dmg you can hover over the word conversion and it explains it to you.

Yea what Nico has written is absolutely right. if you have a 60% conversion to lightning, 60% of your damage only scales with increase lightning/ele and only the 40% left scales with physical. Definetely no double dipping in poe2.

Yes. I was wrong, I thought it was the same as PoE1.

Damage once converted only benefits from the modifiers to the damage it is converted to.

I think the only way you can kind of double dip now is from mods like "gain 25% of physical damage as extra fire damage." But, that's not converted damage, it's additional damage.
