As far as his 1 shot attack goes, just have your volume on so you can hear and he lets you know before he uses it. Just run straight back/away from him and you will never get hit, whatever you are doing, stop and run, and your safe. That is really the only way to lose to him is getting hit by that.
MEanwhile monk in general has several useful skills early on, that are actually better than basic attacks (Which are still amazing for a monk mind you). The slams you have are semi-ranged, meaning you can generally hit monsters (even bosses) outside of the range they can hit you.
Set one up for sure to do cold damage and work on freezing him. Having your Q-staff with decent physical damage, physical damage on rings/gloves and cold infusion, can also let you freeze him just with normal attack (put fast attacks/tempo on that basic attack as well).
Early on you won't have a ton of base physical on your staff (and you fight him really early on as i'm guessing this isn't cruel difficulty). That means just getting any old q-staff, buffing it's quality to 20% (easy to do just buying quality weapons from the vendor), and putting 2 slots on it.....which you toss 2 cold runes into....will give you av ery strong early weapon (obviously make it a rare with up to a regal orb as well....hopefully getting good mods along the way.
Cold damage even if you don't freeze, chills, making him attack slower (And he already attacks slow). Movement speed is good throughout the game so make sure you have 10-15% on your boots asap (that again makes this fight easier as you can move behind him easier/faster and run from anvil attacks).
I didn't have a hard time with him as any class, so I can't help that much more, but in general make sure you have decent ish evasion (Evasion armor is generally better early on because of the wind aura). I think you get the aura by level 11 and before this fight (seriously been awhile and it wasn't a hard fight for me).
The wind aura gives you 45% more evasion and evasion works on all of his attacks I think, except the anvil one (probably why I don't think his other attacks are dangerous lol).
Some armor is still nice as many of his (all?) attacks are physical. That means you can block them and you can reduce them with armor. Doesn't do squat for the fire stuff (but having decent fire resists is good anyway).
Anyway if you do get the wind aura with your base 30 spirit, it adds 45% more evasion (so a multiplier after any other increases) and you can easily have over 60% chance to evade just with that.
Monk can also get heal on hit.....which can let you face tank stuff pretty easy. I got super lucky and got/made an insanely strong monk staff early on, so that def made my monk run waaay easier to start off (it had +3 to melee skills on it!!).
Bonuses to melee skills also boost your basic attack btw (well for q-staff/mace...projectile does xbow/bow). Every additional level makes your basic attacks do more (increases the base % increase indamage for them)....so +3 is huge (with +1 more from my ammy lols).
I did mention your slams, but they won't be your biggest dps, your basic attack will be. Infuse it with an element (I like cold, especially if...like me...you get 30 spirit on your evasion body armor and can use herald of ice AND the wind aura). With ice infusion and 2 cold runes (or 2 20% physical onces once the physical base gets high enough) you will be doing 400+ dps easily even early on, with alot of cold damage (Way more than spells). That lets you freeze things super fast, and the high physical and attack speed means you can then stun them fairly soon afterwards.
That lets you just WAIL on things without them getting to hit back lol.
But there are many times when your ranged slam attacks are key so you do't get hit/hurt. Works great in the first trial for instance, since getting hit there sucks (although high evasion is sure nice!!).
Anyway best of luck to you and hope this helps. Monk can really rock once you get it setup right:)
Monks along with rangers are high skill and high build IQ classes
I brought this up in my own thread! You need to stack evasion so you can evade tank regular hits! however you have to dodge the slam attacks he does! evasion stat will not save you here! You have to learn the mechanics and boss patterns, get ES and life up so if you get tagged its less likely to one shot! play around you're ES! If ES is down back off when it recharges, go back in its that simple!
I also had a good laugh out of you're statement! For starters were not talking about endgame are we?
none of my builds focus on one button, they seem to be nerfing all the one button builds hu? guess what monks wernt one of them they didnt get nerfed!
If they nerfed something and its stronger than before that would be called a buff! lmao
mic drop!
You're the one that said it was nerfed I just corrected you!
Again If its stronger than it was before it thats called a buff not a nerf!
Standard response to somebody that clearly lost the debate/argument.
Well bye!
