New to this, what exactly does chaos damage scale with?

Got a good item with good stats, but it does half the damage my old one did, which had physical instead of chaos damage. What can I change to scale up my chaos damage output?

Spend your perk points on better chaos damage. Use the search function and plan your route. I would not really suggest bending your build to items you find, though... that will get pretty expensive.

so far all i saw to raise chaos is passives and a aura

Spell damage can be a modifier on wands that will increase all of your damage, though there are bonuses to specific damage types, too (like spell damage vs physical spell damage).

Now, the weapon I got is a bow, not a wand. Does it even make sense to up my chaos damage, if I don't use spells?

If you are doing spell chaos dmg, generic spell damage will also scale it

I haven't played Ranger, so I don't know what their passive tree looks like, but if there aren't enough options for increasing your chaos damage, I wouldn't worry about it.
