Is there a good class for newb?
I tried PoE a few times in the past but quickly felt overwhelmed. I bought this game because I do like ARPG's and want to get into it. I thought I would ask if there was a class that might make it easier for someone to get into the game and its mechanics.

Its got a lot to do with build and gear but Witch is a fairly easy class. You might want to follow a build guide if you do not want to run into problems.

As a newb myself, I feel like ranged classes are easiest. I just take too much damage with melee classes unless I roll around like an idiot.

Appreciate the replies, this gets me started.

Every class. Some are easier than others right now, but there's going to be rolling nerfs and other changes for a while. Spend a little time with each that interests you to see which FEELS fun....don't just seek cookie cutter meta builds, etc. Everyone likes different flavors of gameplay. Early access will be longer that this initial rush of FOMO would have you believe.

To much info to impart but real quick.

Every class can be good and can also use any weapons/spells etc if they meet the stat req (which you can choose when going down the passive path).

Defenses are all good early on and having some of each will help you, but I suggest focusing on evasion initially. You don't have to take nodes for it (but they do help), but you want to aim for evasion and or evasion/eshield armor if you can.

The reason for this is fairly early you will get the ability to use auras, and one of them adds 45% more evasion (That is a multiplier after all your increaes etc in the tree). That can make anyone with just a decent amount of evasion on eq (not even taking nodes along the way) have over a 60% chance to evade attacks. It's very useful. You can also get 2 auras going at the same time if you get more spirit.

Which brings me to the second big point. Poe 2 trade. You can trade for items on that website, using cheap/common currency that drops. You can probably outfit yourself in a full set of rare equipment with decent stats just for augment orbs.

You can also get currency to upgrade your equipment from buying quality and slotted items at the vender. Lower level the char is buying it, the cheaper it is. That means later you can get oodles of gold with a high level char and then just keep shopping for items with slots/quality on them with a low level char till you get all the currency you need.

Early on runes will add a TOn to any weapon using character (bow/xbow/staff/mace), as you can add 2 runes of an element which will more than double the damage of low level weapons. What is more it can be used on things like the unique xbow which comes with 2 chains (your attacks chain to other enemies) per shot. The unique xbow that you can buy for almost nothing on poe 2 slotted with 2 ice runes (adds 12-24 cold damage) can literally make you walk through act II with no difficulty.

Armor can also be slotted with resists (those help reduce elemental damage to you) but really are not needed early on (and you'll be upgrading your armor fairly fast).

For resists early on, try and get 2 elemental rings (those are rings with resist fire/ice/lightning as the top modifier), rare, with other good stats on them. Then when you fight a boss, make sure you max out the element it does (First act boss is cold, first trial boss is fire etc). Makes the fights WAY easier.

Any character can use any weapon/spell etc, and you have an alt weapon slot that you can change with X or just set your specific skills to use that weapon. Then all you have to do is hit that skill button and you will auto swap to the weapon with it, that can use it, or that has mods on it (like spell damage/lightning damage etc).

With that you can run around with melee and a shield most of the time, but if a Giant Porcupine monster suddenly shows up and you are like....I'm supposed to melee THAT!!!? You don't have to melee it, use the spells or bow attacks from your alternative weapon.

This also lets you have 2 weapons of 1 type for different elemental focuses (although going with high physical usually lets you convert it into that element anyway, which means you don't really need 2). Still it can be good to have a lightning damage weapon and a cold damage weapon for isntance. You can have 2 staves as a sorcerer for instance, one adds 90 spell and 80 cold damage and the other 95 spell and 77 lightning damage. Just set the spells to each staff and you will auto equip it. Also staves usually come with nice spells that are ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!!! That is right, no spell cost for using those spells and you can support them with the most expensive support gems and its still FREE!!!

IF you go summoner you probably are going to want to run with Raging Spirits as one of your auras. A really good combo for witch (or sorc) summoners is Raging spirit + fire wall with fortress on it, as it summons 5 of them a pop (max 10 at a time) and they can't be killed. If your spellcasting you are probably not attacking with a melee weapon so add faster attacks on your spirits and maybe extra duration.

Witch is....arguably........the easiest class to start as and the most powerful late game due to alot of factors (but mainly the fact that both ascendencies are freaking awesome.IFyou are brand new to the game though I would recomend infernalist first (the blood witch is INSANE but can be hard if you don't build with alot of crit and max life etc).

A witch can still use ANY weapon type, and be crazy good, espcially infernalist since they get so much extra spirit just from an ascendency node. You also get a nice free fire doggo that you can set everything on fire with and also takes 20% of the damage you would normally take (when it's alive at least...but you can make it seriously tanky).

A witch with a bow....does just about as much damage as a deadeye with a bow long term (based on ascendency bonuses since the tree is pretty much the same, just takes a bit more work to get to other points as a witch). The main difference is the witch generally has an army of backup creatures along with it's high lightning arrows/spells (or cold....or both).

Deadeye though does have 1 advantage over the others, which is it's the fastest especially early on, by the time you get your ascendency (which is very fast) you can have 12 base bonus movement speed and 10 more from tailwind (first node in ascendency)...which you can keep up by doing a normal attack (or using any skill) once every 10 seconds. It's second node gives 30% damage reduction as well while tailwind is maxed. Early on 15% movement speed boots are about the best you will get (and by the time you get tailwind you probably only have 10%), so a 22% bonus to movement speed is pretty huge (makes you seem to fly through the game compared to other characters.

To offset that the witch is MUCH harder to kill especially with certain summons.

Anyway you can be anything you want and even as any class you can use any attack method, but yes, over all I would recommend either A: witch or B: ranger as your first. Ranger also generally gets more dex and more evasion early on (even if you don't drastically spec in it, 2 of those nodes that give movement speed also give quite a bit of evasion (Think it's 30% increased evasion each, and that is before the more bonus multiplies it all).

High evasion deadeye might not have an army, but also probably won't get hit very much at all either. You also have projectile damage nodes right there where you start and a witch has to travel around to get them (so you will be doing more damage with bow attacks).

Still easier as a witch and your minion army can quickly get strong enough to just destroy everything as you sleep walk through the game (lol)...yes you gotta cast fire wall here or there, but that is about it and everything dies. Not....quite as much vs bosses, but it's still pretty easy to destroy bosses.

Witch with sceptre with summon skelly warriors socketed with meat shield and instability has skellies that get killed quickly by the boss, but blow up for 150-200 damage a pop. If you go the normal route of a witch getting spell damage and minion damage initially, then heading to the NE and 1 node right near the middle of the start for a ton of max health and faster minion ressurection, those skellies will be popping quite often.

Meanwhile early on having multiple bomb throwing skellies with scattershot and increased AoE support will obliterate packs of enemies while you sleep, switch em out for cold skellies and poison archers for a boss though. The cold skellies with freeze buildup support on them can freeze and chill enemies fast (even the first act boss), allowing you to damage it directly with whatever spell you are using, and for your raging spirits to just constantly attack them (make sure you have 10 out the whole time)

Anyway hope that helps a bit!!

Diggin ranger. Not really tanky (only level 20 somthing). The backflip ice shot is great mobility and usually gets you out being cornered.

Let's be honest here, that's the case for all classes.
If you have bad luck and can't keep up with your gear you will have a bad time.

Your 100% right and I did mean to say that was true of every class but I sure didn't word that very well. Thanks for the correction.

Ranger, you can easy mode trough act 1 with 2 skills which you get from the start .
Don't pick witch if you are not willing to follow builds, people in comments are being extra dumb.

Combine mercenary with ranger skill = tons of damage, easy to play.
Chaos witch with minions = easy to play.
