Question, Resistances?
I was looking at my character screen, and I noticed that I have negative values for resistances for both fire and lightning. i can't figure out why there is a negative value there - I took off all of my equipment, and the values remained. I am not poisoned or anything like that I think. I am in Act 3, the marshes, and I am at the Ziggurat.

Any clue as to what could be causing these negative values? Thanks in advance!

Actually, I think I have it figured out -- it turns out that once you complete an act, there is a -10% penalty applied to your resistances, and that is what I am seeing. It is a design element that makes you rethink gear choices.

So, for those who answered, thanks. I figured it out once I read the wiki LOL.

@Mudpony -- thanks! I read that while your comment was still being evaluated. I appreciate the quick answer.

That's just stupid. So one has to grind ACT 1 until one finds full res gear, then do ACT 2 and grind for more full res gear - with the state that gear drops is in, that's just pure comedy gold. The more I find out about certaing game mechanics in this "beta" the more I think GGG is just here to make fun of their players.

This happens in PoE as well, key difference there is you can EASILY find enough gear to keep your resistance high.

In PoE 2 my biggest challenge with the act 1 boss was finding enough frost resistance gear so he wasn't one shotting me.

I just read up on the changes to PoE1 and the removal of the difficulty levels there. You used to get res penalties between difficulty levels in PoE1 and this was the base of my assumptions that this was an egregious design choice by GGG in PoE2 especially. I haven't played PoE1 since 2020, so I'd assume I'd be befuddled by the changes to res penalties there too if I played it now. You live, you learn.

But the issue remains, finding the right gear (in game) for the purpose of combatting resistance penalties is a bit of a joke right now, IMHO. For example I haven't happened upon a lightning res ring through two acts. I thought the said purpose of PoE2 was to be a bit more for casuals.

No, you dont really need capped resistances for campaign, just some to keep you not getting too much dmg or specific ones against a boss if you struggle with one. Capping resistances is mostly an endgame thingy.

I wonder why they bother with this at all? Just let enemies be enemies. There's no point in a flat decrease in resistances across the board per act. That just feels like improper enemy balancing.

Interesting. I don't think I like that.

Questionable design choices that carried over from POE 1. Might be the only game where you devolve to keep up with the "game balance".

You dont need "Full Resist gear" you need to target resists to bosses and/or zones. Your making it sound way more obnoxious than it actually is.

But that still means you need to find that gear.

it only means theat one act is more difficult then the one before, with an option on the palyer side to work against it.

most likely you alraedy have good res or dont need them at all. i went to act 3 cruel before i had to take res into serious consideration, it upgrade by itselfe as you gear upgrades while you progress

No, you only need like ~30% cold res to make the act1 boss reasonably easy to beat. Don't go for full res in act1. I imagine that would take foreverrrrrr. I still have negative resists in act2 lol. I only care about lightning because act2 boss does lightning damage. So I have like -10% fire res, 50% lightning res, 15% cold res, and 0 chaos res. Lol I feel bad if you've been trying to max your resists this whole time just grinding act1. Ouch.
