Path of Exile 2

Huge latency lag spikes, game actually unplayable, whats wrong?
Sometimes the game works just fine and sometimes it randomly starts lagging really hard out of nowhere, constant spikes(F1 showing it). Game is literally unplayable for me right now and i just wanna play...

I tried changing servers in-game, tried getting latest windows update, latest drivers for my PC, restarted my router, tried literally everything. Nothing is fixing it.

I've run speedtest and i have 1000 down/up with 1ms(Swedish fiber). Internet works fine in any other game and i can browse, watch videos or streams with no issues,

Does anyone else have a similar problem and know of a possible fix?

Anyone having issues with the game jittering, stuttering, whatever you may call it, that are seeing the "network" performance metric spike every time this occurs I highly recommend the looking at the following links for information on the nature of the problem. They were written in regards to poe1 but are still relevant to this game.
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/889669
https://pathofexile.fandom.com/wiki/Networking_mode

It seems to me the root of the issue is they implemented the networking options but failed to make them visible in game. If you follow the steps below you can mess with your networking mode and it may resolve the issue.
In poe2 there are three options that I'm aware of "auto" which is default, "lockstep" and "predictive".

If you go into Options->Game and click the folder icon next to "Item FIlter"
It will open the folder that contains your configuration settings.

After this folder opens close the game client. You need to restart the game for changes made directly to this file to take effect.

Open "poe2_production_Config.ini" .ini may not be visible depending on your system settings.
You can open ini files with any word processing program, notepad++ is a solid choice.
Within this file about a 4th the way from the top of the page you'll find the following:

[NETWORKING]
networking_type=auto

where the word auto is present, change it to either predictive or lockstep.
examples for those intimidated by manually editing settings like this.

networking_type=predictive
networking_type=lockstep

lockstep made it so much worse for me... and predictive did nothing... leaving on auto and keep hoping there is a magical fix for this issue. ;/

Yes, I understand you. The white line in my graph shows the same thing, yet it is still CPU stuttering for me^^ (9800X3D). With the CPU stutter, the latency also briefly spikes. However, if that's not the case for you, you might be dealing with a different issue than many other users. ^^
I got the same issue with CPU stutter. Usually happens after map or two and the only way to solve it is to restart the game. Game can be smooth at 120 fps and then once it starts stuttering (white spikes on graph) it won't go away untill I restart the game. It is extremely frustrating and I feel like I'm restarting game every 30 min. It wasn't that bad until last patch when I see the issue way more frequently.

I'm running RTX 3080 and i5-10600k. Frames are good but these stutters are game breaker for me.

The proposed solution by OP made absolutely no difference for me.

The worst zone is Matlan Waterways, test your solutions there. I have ~150fps at high settings, yet it feels terrible becouse of constant CPU spikes causing stutter. Spikes only happen when i move around the map. There are this invisble lines, whenever i step through them there is stutter. Got latest nvidia drivers, windows update etc. Tried:
disabling c-states (from reddit thread)
disabling hyperthreading
swithing to performance mode
changing all in game graphic options
disabling chat
networking mode in config file

nothing helped.

Bumping this answer, because so far it's the only thing that has immediately helped the lag for me. And oh boy, have I been searching every thread.

For anyone who needs more detailed instructions: Settings -> Network and Internet -> Change Adapter Options (opens new window) -> right click WiFi -> Properties (opens new window) -> Configure button -> Advanced tab -> Wireless Mode -> from the drop-down menu on the right, select IEEE 802.11b. Phew! Worth it.

I still get spikes, but now the game actually recovers instead of just infinitely increasing Network ms into the quintuple digits ... will require more testing to see if it remains better. Thanks, random internet stranger!

Nearly 3 hours of playtime with zero hangs like before! Haven't had play this smooth since before the patch. The above appears to have fixed it for me :steamthumbsup:

I am on a wired connection so that is not going to help me...

It has to be server problem. After midnight it s ok, during players prime time it s hell. Other games has no problem so it s not my internet connection.

Hey there, did you find a solution?

I have the same issue as you & also noticed it to be the worst on the Matlan Waterways map.

Tried everything in this thread (and other threads).
Nothing helped.
It IS DEFINITELY GGG Servers.
It's also "only" ocurring on busy days (which is nearly every day in the holidays...), but there were some good hours without lag spikes in between. But 85% of the time it's unplayable. Definitely gets worse around 8 pm on main gaming hours.

Here's the thing about that claim, Ray.

Thousands of others... over A HUNDRED THOUSAND OTHERS... are NOT having issues with the server, in the same places of the world the majority of those who ARE having troubles.

It IS a problem the user is having, probably.

The OP lists a problem that is very similar to the one I had. If you're also seeing frequent spikes, you may be suffering from packet loss.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/2694490/discussions/0/598514239979727040/#c598514446184265172

If you ARE suffering from that, YOU have to troubleshoot it to figure out where exactly it is happening, and either fix it yourself (if possible), or contact the ISP with details about your problem- and then your ISP can fix it.

"But my internet is working with other services" is NOT an indication that the problem isn't on YOUR side and not the server.
