I used some orbs to augment grey and magic gear to rare gear. Also waited until I found gear with sockets to do it with.
This is not Diablo3
What matters is the correct stats and not how many stats items have.
if you expect to get tons and tons of loot like in D3 /D4 its the wrong game.
you can make items yellow with orbs but its not adviced in early game.
you can absolutely finish act1 with eaz on blue gear....
your problem is probably bad choice of skilltree and skills
Instead of items that give you like 30% more phys dmg you normally get more value by prioritizing items that increase it by a flat amount, same with armor/energy shield.
Later on you fish the ones giving you % increases because you get a lot of base stats just by leveling your characters skill tree.
Every level up you can check the shops in town and see if there is something good hidden in the junk, sometimes you do find some raritys that can be put to use.
Despite that there is not much else to it, the drops in the beginning are usually weaker but any item that increases your rarity found is useful to help with that. They can stack up pretty nicely if you get lucky
Your starting characters also matters a lot, like personally i feel warrior is significally harder in the beginning compared to any ranged class because you are so slow and melee focused with crap gear/resistances, ranged classes get away with a lot more.
I'll just keep chugging along then.
