Yeah, the shift happened right around the time Tencent bought them out. Then Chris Wilson stepped down. Now we have 2 clueless game directors that pretty obviously don't even want to play their own game.
They probably wanted to add some layer of difficulty and more tension. If you look at PoE, pinacle bosses are joke with 6 portals - you can just go full dps, ignore mechanic, die and just pick another portal. Even with bad build, 6 portals are more than enough to "beat" boss with this nobrain kamikadze.
Anyway, i would like to see 2 portals for map to have chance for screwup. With one portal, on dangerously juiced map i often skip things like altars to complete map first and then backtracking to this risky content. Or simply for not being forced to pick valuable stuff in combat (so maybe despawn monsters after death and leaving one portal up to colect loot would be enough).
