PoE2 is in fact designed around joystick and WASD.
PoE1 is NOT designed around it. You basically just limit yourself to 8 directions of movement for no good reason when added to PoE1.
Rest of your post just doesn't match reality. Nobody is asking for less freedom of building.
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3740562
I tried WASD - and went back to m&KB.
The only people who wanted WASD are console-babies.
POE2 isn't constraining build diversity and neither does POE have any particular support for it. POE is *notorious* for people whining that they can only successfully play the game if they make one of the pre-made builds that someone spent a hundred hours datamining and theorycrafting to make.
If you want what made POE popular - then go play POE. Why do you insist that POE2 has to be just like POE? I get you might not like POE2 and that's fine. Then go play POE, stop whining POE2 isn't POE.
No one asked for that (not even those of use who like POE2) but the 'vision' of the game is one where you can't ROFLSTOMP across the map and through bosses and those skills and passives allowed players to be able to do that, hence the nerf.
The game is intended to be slower and require more active work by the player - POE's game is largely in the building of the character, trash mobs are mostly time-wasters, and you test your builds out in the boss arenas where its largely a one-key fight where you use a ranged skill to take a boss down in 5 seconds and dodging invulnerability phases.
In this game, even if you have layered defenses you will still be one/two-shot if you don't actively move around, need to know when to press an attack on a boss and when to back off for a while, and white mobs are supposed to present some danger as you move from boss to boss.
This isn't for everyone - as we can see by all the threads whining that they can't kill everything quick like in Diablo 4.

Simple search and you will see the forums was littered with posts complaining about OP builds in 0.1.0.
Much like people now are complaining about Lightning Spear.
Spoiler: Lightning Spear and a few other skills will be getting nerfed in 0.3.0.
Why would a console baby want WASD? If they're a console baby, they would use a controller.
Real men from the PC master race use WSAD. Imagine moving with your mouse, ewww.
They use a controller - WASD mimics twin-stick shooters.
Hi there, I took some time to look into the topic you mentioned.
While it's true that some players did request nerfs back in version 0.1.0, saying "the forums were littered with posts complaining about OP builds" might be an overstatement. There are currently around 1,064 discussion threads in total. I went through about 500 of them, and I found that posts specifically demanding nerfs were quite rare—probably fewer than 5 threads.
Also, the thread you linked has around 60 comments. Opinions there are quite divided—some support nerfs, others clearly do not. So using that as evidence of a widespread demand may not be entirely accurate.
As for "people now are complaining about Lightning Spear", I can’t tell how many are genuinely upset. But based on GGG’s official stats here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3777214, 23.78% of players chose Amazon, and 10.12% chose Deadeye. I’m not sure how many Deadeyes are actually using Lightning Spear, but I do know that it's particularly strong when used with that class.
All I'm hoping for is a fair and fact-based discussion. Exaggerating things can hurt one’s credibility, and it doesn’t help the community to form balanced opinions. Let’s respect the data and each other’s perspectives.
Thanks for your understanding!
Dude, it seem you doesnt play this game much and read what people type in global chat, almost EVERYONE are using lighting spear and almost EVERYONE talks how OP it is and their grandmother are using lighting spear.
Do you know if you go co op, almost more than 90% chance players are using lighting spear??
If you only JUST look at data and search engine, but never play a lot co op and real game and see global chat and get the data yourself, you are going nowhere, and of course, your "meta build playstyle biased " doenst help you either, because all your argument is always focus on and want this game please meta build players base, you are never neutral.
I'm not so sure there is any single POE community. We seem to be factioned. I agree with you, though. The game being fun is subjective, but I don't enjoy it in it's current state. Your post reminds me of this truth: Those who have criticized POE2 cared more about it than those who defended it. Whether or not the devs realize this is anyone's guess. We aren't bored, mad, or otherwise walking away because we don't care, but because we know the devs could do better. The appeasers, the defenders are the one's who have settled for less.
Thanks for your reply.
However, I believe that without referencing objective data, it's difficult to accurately estimate how many players are actually using Lightning Spear. Relying purely on personal impressions or what's being said in global chat isn't a reliable way to assess trends—especially considering that Path of Exile 2 has multiple global chat channels, and a regular player can only be in one channel at a time. This means no single person can know what’s being said across all global chats. So statements like “everyone is using it and talking about it” are anecdotal at best.
You mentioned that “almost everyone” is using Lightning Spear and that it shows up in 90% of co-op games. While I don’t doubt its popularity, GGG’s own class usage data shows that 23.78% of players picked Amazon and 10.12% picked Deadeye. That’s notable, but far from proof that the entire player base is dominated by one build. If you have more specific data or observations, I’d be glad to see it—I just believe that personal experience should be supported with evidence, not replace it.
Regarding the idea that I'm biased toward meta builds: I’m happy to let others judge whether I’ve been objective by reviewing what I’ve posted. I do enjoy playing strong builds, sure—but since this game doesn’t have PvP, my choice of build doesn’t affect your gameplay experience. Likewise, your preference for non-meta builds doesn’t affect mine. There’s no conflict between us in that regard—we're all free to enjoy the game our own way.
Let’s focus on constructive discussion and stay grounded in facts. I genuinely appreciate your perspective.
I’ll leave you with a small question to consider:
If many people choose to play strong or popular builds, why try to stop them? Does their enjoyment of something you don't prefer really diminish your own?
Do you know lighting spear is not strictly on a class? All those deadeyes, blood mage and Amazon ARE using lighting spear, if you don't just look at data but actually play this game and co op and real global chat yourself, you would know that easily. "I look at the data and % use Amazon", a data without reality and knowledge, just a dead data, a numbers.
And also, I highly suspect you don't even understand what's make lighting spear op in the first place
