you have to activate the POE2 key on the website, then it will give you a steam key. if your friend gave you a steam key they did it wrong. You 1. Make account on pathofexile.com, 2. Activate the POE2 key on pathofexile.com 3. it will give you 2 keys for launching on steam or launching on epic games launcher.

the steam or epic key does nothing on its own as you won't be able to play unless you have the account setup on pathofexile.com

what if i already use the key on steam?

you can launch it, and then login with your poe account when it asks you too, if you don't have a poe 2 key activated on that account you can't play. doesn't matter what order you do things in
