The mercenary is a very versatile class. You're not locked to the crossbow if you don't like the gameplay.
This advice also works for other classes. You don't have to stick to the starting weapon of your class.
And monk been the OP 1. besides that 1 warrior super slam with 1 shots.
what made things alot easier at low to mid levels was the unique crossbow called rampart raptor, this crossbow has a endless ammo buff for 4 seconds after a reload, you can just spam frag rounds at low to mid levels and blast through everything till next reload.
also as far as i know the crossbow bug got fixed with the latest big patch, dont have any issues with it anymore.
culling strike is a joke and only applies if you hit a mob when its BELOW THE THRESHOLD INSTEAD OF ACTIVATING AFTER AN ATTACK BRINGS HP INTO THE THRESHOLD.
for example, if i hit a blue mob for 90% damage which below the 20% threshold, it won't die. i have to hit again. kinda useless. maybe if it did 100% hp of the mob in damage it would work with some overkill mechanics but i need to test that out and as of now it doesn't seem like it does. kinda useless skill imo.
altar is the place where I always die just because my gun doesn't shoot, it's so frustrating
Grenade builds can also work, but are more complicated, and kind of reliant on a particular type of crossbow... good luck getting a level 79 version of it that's worth having.
