Ranger build/How poison and chaos dmg work
1.Just a quick question, I mostly play monk, started to play ranger as well, I enjoy Poison build but I see more people run lightning one, can some good players tell me which one is better?

2.How does Poison work? I saw one guy explanaiton about it, from what I understood is that
chaos dmg + physical dmg on hit = X and 20% from that X turns into Poison which is chaos dmg, however the guy said that increasing chaos dmg in passive skill tree will NOT increase the poison dmg, but it makes no sense for me? Can someone explain?

1. Lightning is by far better, but Poison can still get you through properly.

2. Poison is dealt with a base magnitude of 20% of a Physical or Chaos hit. Means:

100 Physical damage = 20 Poison damage
100 Chaos damage = 20 Poison damage
50 Phy. damage + 50 Chaos damage = 20 Poison damage

The higher the hit damage, the higher the Poison damage.

Increased Chaos damage does not increase Poison damage. Only Poison Magnitude increases Poison damage.

The status effect Withered and the Curse that gives -30% Chaos resistance to enemies work with Poison.

"Increased Chaos damage does not increase Poison damage. Only Poison Magnitude increases Poison damage"

But how does it not increase the Poison dmg?

like u said 50 chaos dmg + 50physical dmg = 20 poison dmg

if we increase chaos dmg by 10%

it will be 55 chaos dmg + 50physical dmg = 21 poison dmg

What am I getting wrong?

To be specific. Damage %increase and multipliers don't work on damage over time (this case works with burning and bleed too). The reason is that dots don't hit. The only exception is if a skill has something like "spell damage modifiers apply to the damage over time of this skill"

Instead %increase magnitude exists for that. So increased chaos damage won't work on poison.

Now, for the important part. Poison applied by a hit (or as though hitting) has a base formula of 10% of (physical+chaos damage from the hit).
The base hitting damage does use increases to physical and chaos passives.
That means that indirectly poison benefits from chaos and physical increases.

That said, they are a lot less potent (because it's 10% of the damage) than magnitude nodes. So you want those instead if you want to make a poison build.

This! Don't buy chaos damage nodes. Go poison magnitude and stack critical strike nodes wherever possible as well.
Slight clarification to the above.

Increased damage of the hit that inflicts Poison will increase the damage of the Poison, so Increased Chaos Damage will cause more Poison damage because the Chaos damage hit is higher, but the Poison itself will not be increased.

So:

100 Chaos damage hit, +0% Increased Chaos Damage, +0% more Magnitude = 20 Poison Damage
100 Chaos damage hit, +100% Increased Chaos Damage, +0% more Magnitude = 40 Poison Damage
100 Chaos damage hit, +0% Increased Chaos Damage, +100% more Magnitude = 40 Poison Damage
100 Chaos damage hit, +100% Increased Chaos Damage, +100% more Magnitude = 80 Poison Damage

So... get both.

Well, yes. In that case it does increase Poison damage. But i mean that increased Chaos Damage doesnt increase the Poison damage itself. It only increases the Chaos Damage hit that will trigger the Poison.

I can also tell you right now, its far more profitable to focus on Physical damage and completely forget about Chaos damage.

This is why I am happy to have Plaguefinger in my ranger poison build.

It helps boost magnitude by bounds.

I sadly havent found that one yet.
Since we've come this far; heed that there's only one (or more) application(s) of Poison active at a time.

To get the most out of Poison, make a big hit once every (PoisonDuration ÷ MaxStack). This also applies to Ignite and Bleed. Assuming 100% chance to poison.

The easiest way to do this is to aim for a crit chance determined by the attack rate of your primary attack that comes close to the duration of the affliction. So, say you have an attack rate of 2 per second, 2 max stacks, and Poison duration of 5, you should aim for a (2÷(2*5)) = 20% crit chance.

Alternatively, invest more heavily into a large attack that you can perform somewhat often (preferably more than once per ten seconds) with high crit chance, magnitude, and duration.

Increased Damage, Crit Damage, Chance to Poison, Duration and Magnitude all multiply with each other with regard to damage over time afflictions caused by hits, so invest equally in all of them until you've reached an optimal amount in any desired stat, then invest more heavily into the others. Eg: extra duration isn't very beneficial if you're frequently making crits and attacking fast.

Just keep farming Act 1. All the notes on this say just do that. Use a MF and farm bosses I guess.
