Easiest Example:
Reaper's Invocation, has max Energy of 500 and you accumulate 1 Energy per kill per Monster Power(Normal Monster 1 Power, Magic 2 and Rare 5 Power).
Increased Energy gain boosts this gain.
After 500 Energy is gained all socketed spells are cast and use 10 Energy per 0.1 seconds cast time of socketed spells.
Detonated Dead for example has a cast time of 0.8 seconds, so it would use 80 Energy per cast and would be able to cast 6 times.
After the Meta skill nerf I would not think too much about it. Even with a build that kills every enemy on screen instantly you need more than one minute to trigger it once. So if your build is not that good it does nothing, and if your build is good and kills fast you don't need it and it also does almost nothing.
