So if a gear piece has more life than the other.. take that.. if you get a weapon that has more dps in your case probably phys or lightning dmg.. take it.
I've had some gear last me 10+ levels so it just depends on your RnG with the rolls. If you don't think it will make your char. better then keep on doing what you are doing.
i usually look which piece is the weakest / easiest to replace and start there
otherwise go as far as you can
and start upgrading when you notice lack in damage / survivability
Then panic when I start getting owned 😂
If you're not taking a ton of damage, then you have enough defenses. Resistances will become more and more important the deeper you get into the game though. So If you find a ring, amulet or belt that has multiple resistances (like +15%-ish) you will probably end up keeping that for a while.
As far as "which stats" goes that depends on what active skills and passives (on the tree) you've picked. If you've been taking tree passives that effect evasion then you probably want gear that has some evasion on it. Likewise if your skills do lightning damage, then you want to boost lightning damage if you can.
When it comes to replacing your weapon you can see a skill's DPS change in real time on the page where you equip gems. Meaning you can swap your weapon back and forth and see which gives you a better damage range or more DPS.
While you're under level 50 don't worry too much about stats over than defenses though. You're going to be replacing most of your stuff every 10 levels or so.
