Portal and Map reset during stats, passive tree or equipment changes?

Is it just me or is it the game? When I make a portal to town and start tweeking the passive tree or upgrading the gems, equipment or trying to compare stats with the new found equipment, I find that when I go back to the portal it is gone???? I then have to use the town teleport pad and it only drops me back at the start of the map and it has not only removed all my progress but has at times completely changed the layout of the map? Most times it works fine (as long as I just drop off/sell and go right back) and I can travel back to the last location but if I mess with the equipment (EG: change them or the stats, alter the passive tree etc...) It completely closes the portal re-sets the map and I am back at the start... Very frustrating.

Portals last 8 - 15 minutes then disappear, even in POE 1.

I mean it says the maps will reset after 8-15 min on one of the loading screens.
