Question about merging PoE accounts

I went to connect my Steam account to a PoE account (I made a couple months ago), and I got this message:

The Steam account associated with this request is already linked to another Path of Exile account.
Current Account: NewUser#5120
Existing Account: OldUser#0303
Proceeding with this request will permanently associate your accounts.
You will not be able to merge any further accounts with the same login methods () to this Path of Exile Account.
This action cannot be undone.

Will I then have two accounts, or will the new one override the old one? Which one becomes my username (or account name I guess)?

Just trying to make sure I don't screw anything up before picking up Path of Exile 2.

Edit: I had made a new account, because I couldn't find any record of/way to login to my old account. However, I just found out that I can login to the PoE website via Steam, which has my old account, but it wasn't/isn't tied to any email. I do prefer the username on the new account, which I think is public?

Dont do it. If you have characters leveled on our steam account it will remove them.

any char in poe 1 is uesless in 2 anyway

It merges the accounts if you did it right.

I have this on PSN and Steam. My accounts are merged. You get two logins basically. Its a little tab down thing, where you choose between:
Riukensei#1231
and
Riukensei#4454

not my actual numbers, but you get it. The characters do not merge, you have to swap between the accounts for the characters. I ONLY play thru my Steam account, even when I am on PSN.
