Explain who is forcing you to use a crossbow.
He can't use a quiver because crossbow.
The game it's forcing him to use a crossbow if he wants to do a grenade build, since those are limited to only crossbow.
Culling+devistating strike cuts around 25%-35% of a boss's hp, more for mobs
Enemies exploding for 10%-20% chance
Breaking a boss's cooldowns so that they never have a chance to use the big stuff that kills you while getting a flat 40% more damage.
How is any of that bad enough to make it the worst class?
Like really? lol.
Culling Strike on everything you do, passively.
Decimating Strike ripping 30% of the victims health off in a singular shot to start a fight.
How the heck are you struggling with it?
If you're struggling with Chaos damage, invest in Chaos Resistance... That's an everyone problem. Not uniquely Merc.
It may look like this on paper, but not during the game.
If there was a class reset, we would have lost 4-5 people who were in the top 1000.
For me xbow is only used in alt weapon slot for 2 abilities (only used on bosses), the rest are bow skills because they are straight up better. That btw means the witch hunter also gets to use quivers (and yes, you can easily get over to the nodes that boost quiver by 80% as well).
Meanwhile as insanely awesome as tailwind and it's upgrade are (and they are awesome) they mainly add to defense and movement speed. That is great, but witch hunter adds a TON of offense especially in combo with 1 set of unique gloves.
First you have the ability that explodes enemies for their full max health 10% of the time. This is amazing in maps and makes clearing screens awesome. That by itself is great throughout the game, especially in combo with ice shot + herald of ice.
But then you have the 2 concentration skills. The first is only meh, but the second makes you do 30% more damage pretty much all the time, especially in combo with demolishing strike or whatever it is, that does 5-30% of the max health damage before your first attack is factored in.
Since concentration is based of 40% of a monsters max health, that means even your first hit probably does 20% more damage and you are doing 40% more after that.
Problem is you can't et both of them and the exploding one all at once. You could swap out the exploding one before doing a boss, to swap it in, then have the plasma shot + emergency ammo on an xbow in your other weapon slot to start a boss fight. With that + the decimating strike, you will have done 40% of a bosses max health for sure, meaning everything else (all bow attacks) will have the full 40% more damage bonus.
But to have it all the time is pretty easy IF you can get the unique gloves that give decimating strike. You can even swap that in/out for big fights (since you don't really need it while killing packs of enemies).
Anyway Witchhunter is ......other thanmaybe titan, the most offensive/damaging bow using ascension in the game right now. Titan has more pure damage, and has the heavy stun bonus of 40% (and can heavy stun much easier), while getting both of those along with the 50% more small node bonus. In addition titan is near a FREAKTON of attack/physical damage nodes.
A titan can have (end game) about 2-3x the base increase to damage (before other multipliers) so technically is better than witchhunter or deadeye at using a bow.
But yeah, witchunter is in the top 3 for sure, def over gemling and the other ranger one (poison based forget it's name).
It's one of my favorite chars to do maps with because of the clear speed. Even though titan does more damage, it only actually matters against bosses really, and witch hunters HUGE explosions for 100% of enemies hp (that stack with multiple going off) makes up for the damage difference easily vs large groups.
Witch hunter rocks.
Honestly both witch ascensions rock, deadeye, witch hunter and titan all rock. I'm not a fan of the sorc ascensions but I guess storm is very popular/strong as well.
I fully understand frustration of an inexperienced player in this game, but while some combinations of skills and classes are stronger than others, there are definitely builds to destroy endgame with crossbow.
You will want to layer defense. Life and capping element resistance is your first priority. It's the base expectation and not the gold standard. If you are evasion, add in blind. Maybe even some ES and ghost dance. Recovery on kill is strong.
Apart from that, damage is usually a gear issue, or at least most easily overcome by upgrading gear. There are combinations of skills from other "classes" that may very well enhance your build. Cold damage and herald of ice comes to mind, and the unique ring Polcirkeln makes for screenwide explosions.
It's hard to give any specific advice with little to go on. Best of luck. Stay sane
I have a witchhunter with 3 dragons, I have experience with this class, I melt bosses about as fast as my totem warbringer and mobs die just as easily at the same level.
Culling Strikes kill normal enemies if their life is at 30% or below. Magic enemies are instead killed at 20%, Rare at 10% and Unique at 5%. These thresholds are checked before the damage of the Hit is applied
I suggest you read it again.
yes.. so what ?
