you can combine armor with 75% passive block (shield + 2h), some eva (even 40% will be noticeable), es or hp.
EDIT: ^ in warrior's case
Depends on your build, items, playstyle. Difficult to say.
So unless you want to path towards that, go for evasion (granted it does give a massive evasion debuff, but you can recoup it elsewhere) however going for energy shield for big hits, and armor for little hits is probably the best bet right now
so far it works at t13 maps
The base defence for every character is life and/or ES.
On top of that, it is very advisable to have either block or evasion to greatly reduce incoming damage. Both have a very similar effect.
Armor is a final addition good melee fighters who really get into the fray and take lots of damage from many small mobs.
I have a titan with 7k life, max block and 15k armor. He feels nigh immortal as long as the map does not have "players have -max resists" modifier. With this character i would feel ok playing HC.
I have a ranger with 2k life, 2.5+2.5 ES, zero armor and 85% evasion. She is doing great most of the time, but every now and then a yellow mob just craps on her. No chance i could play this in HC.
So all those people who say "life and armor are horrible" ,they are just plain wrong.
You also cant compare these things in a vacuum. Yes, armor, evasion and ES are all stats on your armor items, so one is inclined to compare them. But really its ES vs Life and Evasion vs Armor vs Block. You want 2 out of those last 3 to not be squichy. And the fact that some comes from items while other things come from the passive tree, thats just what makes character building such an art. And note that there are also plenty of unique items that fall outside the standard there and are build deciding. So you cant compare armor-ES-Evasion, you need to compare complete builds.
As for a 2 handed melee fighter and evasion. As of now it seems every warrior is using a shield because that works great and we have 2 passive nodes that together give 150% increased damage if you have max block, negating the dmg advantage of dual wielding almost entirely while giants blood means warriors use 2 handed weapons in 1 hand, so that that is not a tradeoff either. I think its rather likely though that in the future we are at some point gonna see more shieldless melee fighters with armor/evasion. I hope and kinda expect the axes and swords to have skills where the damage advantage of dual wielding will be bigger. (bigger than the "2x70%" we have now with all the mace skills.
