There is always a checkpoint at the boss and you respawn at that checkpoint if you die.
With checkpoints or without - why map restarting and loose all loot and monsters?
There is always a checkpoint besides the boss, and there is always a checkpoint near waypoints, as far as I know. Just salty he died and looking to complain.
If you don't like dying, build so you don't.
To be fair, there are some bosses that can be approached from multiple directions and you can run into them without seeing the checkpoint.
