What does Diablo need to reclaim the crown?
Say Blizzard brings you in as a top consultant to turn things around. What changes or policies would you implement to put Diablo back on top?

To say I now couldn't care less about the future of Blizzard is an understatement.

It's like a failed marriage. It had its time, when it was good it was great, but we very much grew apart and nothing will ever bring me back. I've moved on a long time ago and quietly feel superior to others clinging on to some sense of loyalty, nostalgia, whatever...

you didnt grew apart, blizzard north was closed and thats pretty much it

regarding the topic :

you shouldnt talk about an ARPG crown in a poe2 forum and also not in d4 forum, otherwise nobody with just a few functioning braincells gonna take u serious

d2 still holds the crown up to this day and no competitor even comes close. poe2 is pretty much a d2 1to1 copy in new clothes and thats it, just like many before. its hyped atm and its fresh and new and thats why it has the attention it has right now

the best ARPG on the market rn is d2 resurrected

Best ARPG...
...if you're wearing nostalgia goggles is D2
...if you're in your mid 20's is Grim Dawn
...if you're a whale suffering sunk cost syndrome is D4
...if you took a time machine two years into the future is PoE2
...if you own a phone is Diablo Immortal :coromon_devil:

I'd probably get them to buy out GGG then sack them. Thats what AAA companies do anyways.

The ONLY way Diablo can recover is from an almost complete upper level staff overhaul and a PR rework. All of that poured into the game. I'm sure they are good people in general, but they are also so full of themselves that they cannot see problems with what they are doing. Yes, I know specifics; but, I don't feel like typing a novella to the choir when you have two camps: those that don't see a problem, and those that already know what I'm talking about.

:)

really just more to do in the end game. minute to minute gameplay and fighting is superior to poe2....by alot.

I disagree with the fighting assertion. I could stand with a little less rolling in POE2. I roll like a madman.

Taking the OP question seriously, i mean... here are my 5 biggest gripes at least.

1. A 1-1 copy of D2 would be better here. Scrap the item system, rework it from the ground up including the art, rework 80% of the mods and take a huge step away from the legendary focus.
Collecting squares is boring as it ruins the whole character of the item system, most of the mods are boring or feels like a chore, legendaries shoehorns players into patterns(this is so they can easily balance the game which brings me to)

2. Re-evaluate the focus on balance. They balance this game(and all their games) like its a competetive game. Should you change the balance between seasons? YES. Should your arpg have ways to break it? 100% always, these games are all about power feel, and blizzard grinds it down until everything is within 1% at the topend.

3. Skilltree is way to linear with too few options and the Paragon system is filler content which just takes from the already subpar mod system where it matters.
It doesnt have to be as freeform as PoE, but it would be better if they merged these systems and landed somewhere between. Both the original skill system in D4 AND D3 looked more interesting, but they scrapped both...

4. Endgame needs way more depth and needs more value. The place where the people who play A LOT end up should accommodate people who play a lot, when i played last it felt like it needed orders of magnitude more incentive once you got past the 100 hour mark.

5. Drop the psuedo mmo stuff and do a huge rollback on the pricingmodel. Full price, paid expansions, battlepass, mtx. Its just too much and the game simply isnt worth the price of any of those things.

Thats just 40% of it id say. At the end of the day they are never getting to that point as it would entail making a new game.

How is this relevant to PoE2 discussion?

There is always hope but the men in suits like to stomp on hope.

I would sell the Diablo IP and let someone who actually has drive and passion make the game. Blizzard died a long time ago.
Some soulless, corporate entity is wearing its skin suit. They are devoid of all drive and talent except trying to claim every dollar on the planet but by focusing on only making money they they lose focus on the one thing that WILL make them money: A Good Game.

Its sad that these corporate entity's will never understand that being staffed solely by people who dont play games, have 0 interest in the hobby and/or have outright hatred and disdain for gamers is going to lead to their collapse.

Im not sad that Blizzard is dieing, im sad that it'll sit on life support for 50+ years, holding beloved IP's hostage as they try ply every penny they can from them.

Tell them to make an endgame that works and take more risks, and treat your players like that are intelligent and mature...

Diablo II ironically was peak Diablo, but that had zero structured endgame.
