If it is your first time, it's suggested you go into steam big picture mode and set a controller calibration/configuration, that will bypass any game limitations and use what you specifically set. Helps a lot on games with bad dead zones.
I'm not sure if this is your issue mind you, but just a suggestion.
I'll check, but I use a controller often with Steam games. Makes it easy to do low-intensity cardio exercises while not being bored to death.
Hopefully they change this so it's easier to swap between control styles, but at least it works.
