It's a balance act. Just hardcore gamers don't pay the bills.
i have not reached end game maps yet but it just seems like when you get stuck there gear and skill optimization takes you further. the balance of this game feels just right and in this genre thats really hard to do. so very impressive work.
The word you're actually looking for is "punishing". If you're good at a game like this, you aren't punished. Elden Ring does not punish you for bad builds; you can freely adapt (to an extent) and easily farm more strength or even make the game outright easier. PoE2 allows you to adapt, but it will cost you. PoE2 allows you to farm more strength, but there's RNG and getting exactly what you want is not cheap.
And then on the flip side, you can arbitrarily be punished because a part of your build is OP. The common player will aim to make OP builds, but against their own sense, it isn't actually fun to play OP builds for long. It behooves them to squash builds that are so OP that other perfectly viable builds are *Not* considered nonviable- which is actually due to a lack of skill fostered by reliance on overpowered builds.
But its a beta game. If you find something OP, even if you don't talk about it, I expect they're collecting analytical data that will reveal OP builds. The more common it is, the more likely your OP build will be hammered.
I learned a valuable lesson from a player who was very good at finding OP builds once; they purposefully played thematic underpowered builds specifically so they could enhance their own skill at playing the game. Brilliant.
This game is on the soft side of skill difficulty - my aging mediocre reflexes and precision is more than easily adequate to avoid dying once I know what's coming - but it is punishing and requires thought if not following a guide or copying someone else's build.
