This game is very build heavy, just like Diablo4 very build heavy.
If you don't have the right build setup as in skills and using the right weapon modifers and what not, you aint gonna be doing much. And everything is going to feel like a sponge.
As for tip of advice.
Open your skill window, when you decide on to use or not to use an item, watch the dps of whatever your using. Is the dps better or worse.
ex. if your using totems, your weapon dmg does not matter, +skills is how to make totems hit harder.
Also,
boss fights like Rattlecage which pretty much chases you if your ranged player so you just run away and its easy fight, lots of bosses are very tough against melee, but ranged players they don't have any tough things to do deal with. So bad build PLUS bosses are very good at making life HELL for melee, thats a bad combo I see your frustration.
Ironically mapping goes right back to too little. At least balance like this is easily fixable. It's the core mechanics that are a problem.
