"Armour is a defence that provides damage reduction to incoming physical damage from spells and attacks."
You'd think this would make it much stronger than armor or evasion, but you can't really have all three, right? If you equip pieces with energy shield, they won't have armor or evasion on them. If they do, it's half-n-half anyway.
Also, chaos damage (poison for example) bypasses ES.

There might be changes to how it works between the games, so take this with a grain of salt. But most other things work the same way.
There is a Perk for it and it's Called Adamant Recovery. ( Increases and Reductions of Armour also apply to Energy Shield. this also reduces the recharge rate by 40% )
So yes you can get Energy shield to stack armour.
They are different things, but some armor pieces have both. It will say so on the item.
