Is an artillery ballista build viable?

I found these things to die very fast and do very little damage, but I wonder if they would be worthy of socketing up and going for the passives.

Like with some dedication and having 4+ ballistas up could it do some impressive damage suddenly?

maybe if you build into totem damage,
Im currently working on rapid fire witch hunter build, and for now i clear easily evrything>
To be honest normal mobs kill me more often than bosses.
