Armor feels unreliable
I am only level 36. I tried to theorycraft a warrior that steals armor, and then relies on very large armor values to regains a lot of health using a boon in the passive tree (recoup 17% of the reduced damage, or something).

The problem is: my armor feels more like wet paper than actual armor, and standing in a group of enemies instantly shreds me regardless of the ridiculous amount of armor I have. I also get barely any healing from the passive recouping. All my items have the highest armor I could find so far, and most of them have very high "get additional armor" modifiers. I selected additional armor modifiers in the passive tree. Part of this is the elemental damage - I get that much, but also regular enemies seem to just go straight through armor. My whole build is terrible as a result, but I would like to know why.

I have a genuine question: How does your character deal damage?

Double maces, I got all the "deal extra damage against fully broken enemies" traits. The damage I deal against a single target is fairly consistent. I tried to incorporate the armor gain with thorns to deal with trash mobs -but I just die instantly regardless of my armor anyway.

Melee takes quite a bit of gear and levels to start shining, died at least 30 times act 1-3, hit a breakthrough point in gear and passives and breezed through to act 3 cruel in around and hour or two. Also if you are gonna try to focus on thorns you might want to invest in using a shield and getting block chance up they seem like they would work together well.

I'm not really sure what to do with this information. How does this relate to my problem?

Are you suggesting armor is literally pointless until later in the game? My dps seems fine. It's just that armor doesn't prevent any meaningful amount of damage.

I am playing as a Titan, only using armor (No evasion or ES) and i have zero problems with it. Act 1 was a little more dificulty because i didnt have enought armour points or guear i guess, but you can just dodge every hard hit and tank minor hits. Well, i did that, and now i can face tank almost anything. bosses included.

recoup is borderline useless rigth now, just leech until a balance patch comes

Sigh, I feared this would be the case...

Just wait until you get to do endgame maps.. I have currently lvl 75. 1600 HP almost 9000 armour and a simple crossbow shot from some mobs take 1/3th of your life away and I'm only on map level 5... Armour is currently a joke (as in POE I've read), which is sad because it's exactly what I like to play like you and expect to not die or get oneshot by a few simple mobs. The icemonks swirly thing does a ton of damage as well (even with decent frost resist) and if you dodge wrong it can even kill you instantly...

This video explains very well how (currently) the system works.

I am brand new to the POE world and kinda new to the genre, loving the game so far.

I am dealing with the same issue, I am still learning the game and currently working on tier 4 maps and endgame maps. I am running a titan stun build that deals massive damage and is currently rocking for tier 4 thru 5 maps, just really lacking bad in defense and all my armor I soon realize has done jack nothing for me.

I am re specd into life regen and shield and testing this out, still feels like a glass cannon still. I guess for now gotta deal with it until they fix armor, hopefully they do because no point to being a warrior lmfao if we cant take high amounts of damage. or not get one shot by regular mobs.

Other then that I am loving the Titan stun explosive build, even single target with perfect strike I am hitting hard at these levels.

From what I've heard from those who have crunched the numbers, armour is something where you either go all-in or don't bother at all. At high values you get great protection, the more you get the better off you are. But you can't afford things like passives cutting down 50% of your armour for some other gain, it destroys enough of your protection that you'll be taking a large proportion of extra damage.

To that end, trade. Anything you can find or buy is going to pale in comparison to some of the ridiculous armour other people have found. For example I'm running monk and stacking evasion as much as I can. The best evasion chest piece I'd found was ~700 evasion, then I looked into trading and soon had a chest piece with ~1900 evasion. The difference is just unreal.

Armor is busted until patched.

Just feel loads better I'm not the only one getting lasered down from time to time... <3

I feel the same way about evasion tbh. I could count on one hand how many times I've been saved by evading(with decent evade stats mind you) a giant insta kill from a boss... and I'm halfway through the game lvl 51

Make a high life character, then a high energy shield character, and get hit from the same enemy and look st the life and ES value from each hit.

You'll notice that ES loses less points than life.

It is like this
poe1 armor formula: Armor/(Armor+ 5 X Damage)
poe2 armor formula: Armor/(Armor+ 12 X Damage)
poe1 you get hit for 5k with 20k armor: damage reduced by 44%
poe2 you get hit for 5k with 20k armor: damage reduced by 25%
poe1 you scale armor very good, some investment get 20k
poe2 you scale armor very bad, full investment, ignoring damage you get 20k
