Why do names matter?
This is a single player game with chat for the most part. Why do you have to have an original character name? Other than that the game is amazingballs

cos everything in the game is saved server side. Need a unique ID for your char or how's it going to keep track of your progress? Really is it.

Otherwise, really is no diff than why use a user name in a chat room. An identifier, so people know who is talking.

What a weird question lol

Other games seem to manage it just fine with connecting character name to an identifier unique to your account. It's not rocket science. Displayed name could easily be let's say "Blackwolfe" while the unique name (not displayed) would be Blackwolfe#<unique identifier>

There are tons of ways to handle this instead of the character name. Such as a unique identifier number that is generated on creation. Or the server data adds a string of numbers to the name that doesn't actually get shown to clients. Or through account name. Or IP. Or anything else that's a unique marker.

That requires coding at a level beyond GGGs capabilities.

Its not. This is a solved problem. Unique ID is made by the game, while the player can pick whatever display name he chooses. That's literally how everything online works, all accounts with display name. Having your display name be also your unique ID is a stupid, archaic idea that has no place in modern games, or anywhere really.

Disagree, several other players I've friended or whom are progressing at a similar rate keep finding me, having names stay the same and be unique is good for the social aspect of the game considering it's a fully proper mmo-lite with player trading, good working party finder and everything.

This will go over great when there's three guys named Eren Jaeger in the guild or something lol. Also, it could help impersonation scams.

Actually, it could use the Steam ID as a unique identifier or something similar for non-Steam versions. Your uniqueness is tied to your account, not to your character, so having the same character names is possible. In POE, this is a design decision rather than a technical necessity.

I have no idea why the POE designers chose this approach, but you can question any design decision—during development, there are thousands of choices to make.

It's the opposite - unique names aid impersonation in that it adds a sense of legitimacy to the name. If a scammer creates an account using someone else's name (without the victim even being aware of the game), then they're free to impersonate as they want. But if the same name can be used by anyone, other players are more wary when they see someone using it.

There's no sense in unique names. We don't have unique names in real life, why do we need them in games? All they do is cause frustration for players. Can you imagine having a child and being told the name "Sam" is already in use, you can try Sam1912_?
