For now there is no mechanic to do it

But logically it should go to lower gems

You're implying there is a reason but haven't given one yourself. I'm also curious to why you would want to down grade in this game.

Down grading wouldn't change the stat requirement. Every green gem cost 5 dex, red 5 str, blue 5 int. These values never change level 1 gem or level 20.
Yeah mana would go down, but so would your damage. If your doing less damage your still going to use more mana in the end then if you didn't down grade and it cost a little more but stuff dies faster

Then you would just go get a lower level gem... only possible reason I assume they made another character and wants to use the gems they already have rather then go get one ... but then you would just get ones for your level by playing normally. which won't even work since skill gems still have levels, Support gems however have no stats needed so don't even need a system to lower them

1. Yeah a new gem at the level of the gem. I offered you a practical solution to your theoretical problem.

2. Maybe you should go to lower level areas than maps if you are looking for lower level skills. Having your idea implemented won't fix your problem anyways if you are playing maps since most skill gems there are level 14+ If you want lower level gems to lower your current skill/spirit gems, you still have to go to lower level maps to find them.

3. It actually is not that hard. I take my level 71 character and play maps with a lower level friend, and I see plenty of spirit gems drop.

Are people really forgetting about... gem quality, gem socket quantity... you might want to keep those
and are you guys really omiting the fact that gems game mana cost and req with levels... you might want to downgrade some gems as your build progresses in a certain direction

Whole concept of going to low level campaign just to get low lvl gem is stupid and "unfun". PoE has option to downgrade gems with just currency, we could get it for gold. Or let us chose lower lvl while cutting new gem.

Nop. Cutting new gem is not "exactly the answer" for lowering lvl of your current gem.
