never really corrupted an item, not really sure when to use on an item tho.

Yes uniques are safe to corrupt most of the time.

That said, if you're actively using it, have a second one as a spare first. You're never safe from getting it rerolled as a rare instead, pretty much breaking your unique and your build.
Otherwise just do it for science.
