Class Variants and Different Skill trees

These are 2 separate questions. I'm not sure if I should make 2 threads, but they're at least somewhat related. Hopefully this isn't confusing

1. What are class variants? I just realized you have 3 options for each class. I wasn't even paying attention when I chose my characters. THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN ASENDANCIES. Just trying to figure out if I bricked my character. They really should change the UI and give more info on this.

2. Also, I've done sorceress and witch and noticed their starting skill trees are different. I'm just curious how much of the skill trees are changed for each class. I don't have a ton of hours in PoE 1, but I thought skill trees were the same except for starting position.

I think the variants are just telling you like what type of gameplay you can expect from each class. Their strong suits basically.

Skill tree is just the starting position. It's not a different tree. They just started at a different spot.

No. The witch and sorceress have different nodes in the same place
