Gender lock still a thing?

So is this game still going to gender-lock all the classes? I never played the first game because of that, and was hoping they'd fix this for the second one.

This is not Diablo 4, all skills can be used by all classes which means they have to animate all 12 characters. It's not going to happen any time soon if at all

Pick a female class nearest to the class you want on the skill tree and work your way over there on the skill tree. Choose stats accordingly. It isn't rocket surgery, Think outside of the tetrahedron.

They are small studio and dont have much budget to work too much on the character customizations. They told that they would prefer to invest their resources into game and gameplay itself rather than character customisations and making different animations and all cosmetics to fit all those customisations.

They are not classes. I keep reading that they are 'genderlocked classes' - they are not classes. They are different characters - like actual people - and they just start on different points on the tree. They have backstories and everything. The only classes in the game are the ascendencies. You can't fix the gender of Tidus in FFX and you can't do it here either, but you can make Tidus into whatever you want. Same thing. They only let you name them so you don't see 100,000 Tidus' running all over the place.

Can only certain genders be certain classes? What does any of this have to do with being gender fluid; that premise would mean that only females could be sorcs, for example. Its more of an insult to the genders than it would be a championing...

Yes, a character, not a class. GGG has explained this multiple times. I am not guessing. I am telling you the official reason.

actually your gender does NOT change, only your appearance changes your genes are what they are regardless of what you do to your body.
