Also in lategame you can summon a cleric that heals your minions and as your skill gems level up minions cost less and less spirit allowing you to grow a significantly bigger army.
With all that being said, it's still really poorly tuned base monsters do way too much damage in the campaign which also impact minions obviously but imagine playing as a Warrior or a Monk instead and getting nuked by trash mobs.
"quickly" is an extremely long time if a pack of enemies is hunting you down and trying to surround you. Not that the minions taunt anyway, but at least they stand in the way and body-block or otherwise distract some of the enemies.
It's not that much of an army in my opinion.
And making them die quickly as a design choice is meh...
I think that's not fun at all.
When you play a summoner class it's not fun to re-summon your minions on every trash group.
Minions makes no sense right now, they are always dead, they dont do damage and they are useless beside warriors being free meat shield if you use a scepter.
Explore your passive tree, do a search for minion and you will see a whole bunch of nodes flash that enhance your minion skills.
