Controller Button Unmapped

I am using an Xbox wireless controller with whatever the default settings are for it and I cannot use the A button to attack with a wand. It is grayed out on the panel at the bottom of the screen and does nothing. I have looked through the options and cannot find anywhere to change the mapping. The controller works because A is a major menu navigation button that functions just fine outside of combat. Someone please help point me in the right direction.
