good luck killing devourer at lvl 3 with sword and board or even with a 2hd at that level.
Bosses seem to be the best thing about poe 2 so far, even for melee
Learn to dodgeroll
Shield block...blocks everything, so switching can be useful, but your damage with a shield is paltry and it's a waste of skills. 2 handed with good supports destroys stuff, including large groups of stuff. Dodge roll is generally better than shield but sometimes there is a large aoe etc and block is all you can do.
If you are going warrior aim for the health regen (don't go down the side with armor though, get the damage and then go down from there to get the .9% max health regen per second). Get health and health regen on your equipment as well. High max health with plenty of health regen makes it MUCH easier to handle melee. The devourer can be done quite well with a 2 handed weapon, decent health regen and a good high damage skill with damage mods on it.
You also can just cheat and use a lightning staff and orb of storms, it destroys everything but isn't melee. It does make the early game super easy for any class though and lets you focus your nodes on defense initially (it's cheap to redo them later) .
Yeah, melee sucks, at least early.
Bosses take a little longer, but the dodge windows are very generous compared to a Fromsoft game so I'm also not having that hard a time here. Nearly all go down in 1 attempt.
I recommend checking the vendors in town every level. If you can get a decent 2hander, it will make progression a breeze.
