gem combinations

the thing i loved most about poe1 was the gem combos, if you added a fire gem to your bow you shot a fire arrow, if you added a split modifier gem to that you shot two fire arrows, if you had a full connected slot bow with the colors you wanted you could do some legendary damage,
i want to konw if theyr are expanding on this system, i konw the gem slot system is being revamped, but i want to konw if there is going to be more combinations, i want borderlands levels of weapons and gem combinations

You can't use more than 1 of each support gem (for example you can use Multiple Projectiles only with one of your active skills)
And support gems are more interesting, no supports which just give you more damage
