Why can't we get a character creation?
I'm a new player to ARPGs, the WASD movement and general quality makes me very excited about this game but my only issue or nitpick is the character creation.

I've asked around on Reddit and whatnot and far as I know every class can wear and use every weapons if they have the required points for it, like a ranger can use a sword and wear heavy armor. So first I thought they couldn't give us character creation because they probably made heavy armors to fit only warrior model for example but that's not the case so why can't we have a basic character creation?

Even presets for classes would be nice, 2 preset for each class maybe. I've got downvoted on Reddit for asking this and the generally the answer was no one cares, or you won't see your character under armor, which they're right in some aspects but character creation is important for me any many others, also armors look different on woman characters etc. and to RP it would be nice to have.

I think this is the same issue as WASD on Diablo 4, all "long time" players hated the idea and mocked people for wanting it but outside of that "long time" players, new players wanted it and PoE2 announced that they were doing it and Diablo 4 added WASD movement as well. I think the same is happening, people that don't care or used to non existing character creation on PoE hate the idea of character creation for literally no reason, it would be just a basic game mechanic that people would appreciate, especially new players.

I've watched a lot of interviews about the devs of PoE2 and in one of them they explained that there isn't many humanoid characters so they don't have any reason to use resources to build a character creation. This is completely fine, but we should meet in the middle my idea of fixing this is a preset system, you click on the character and select from 2 different models with this you don't have build a character creation but can provide variety so every warrior class is not the same dude running around. Other method could be let us choose our class and model differently, for example, let me pick ranger but after that I can choose to play as the druid model.

TL;DR: As a new ARPG player, I'm excited about the game but disappointed with the lack of character creation options. every class can use any armor and weapons, so why not have at least a couple of presets per class for more variety so every warrior class won't be the same dude running around. I believe character customization is important, especially for new players to the genre. The devs mentioned limited humanoid models as a reason for the lack of options, but a simple preset system could offer more variety without requiring extensive resources or a paid mtx options to make more money.

Edit: To people that think it's useless because you don't see your character when wearing armor, your characters' size, length, gender etc. affects how they look on you, so that's why it's important to have some way of character creation or customization, here's a class comparison for the same armor from the devs 00:19 https://youtu.be/q7AcUwU2QUI?si=fmEGOxmcVjqspeO9&t=19

As far as I'm aware it's because the characters are actual "people" with backstories and personalities that are attached to their appearance in the same way you are, in real life. There's even a 150 page art book related to the game which contains all of the characters. Akin to say, Geralt from The Witcher, he is generally un-customisable outside of hair/facial hair, because he IS that. You're playing as a pre-existing individual with their own thoughts and feelings. Not a nobody husk like you are in Diablo 4.

I'm not against a character creator, but I see this as a pretty valid reason to NOT have one in game.

Makes sense and it's a valid answer. But my counter point would be why can't we select our character, whoever and then pick our class. For example, I choose the warrior, his look and backstory but then I select monk.

Witcher 3 example is good, yes you're limited for changing his look but you can totally change how he fights, his skill tree basically. I don't want something extreme, I just want to be able to choose my character, one of the main reasons is I hate when games force people to be one character, every class looks the same. I know you wear armor and stuff but your every class looks different on the same armor for example.

Side note, loved your STALKER 2 mod.
I think it's also just a generality thing, most ARPGs don't have any form of character creator dating way back to the creation of the genre in the way you're describing as they don't have any intrinsic effect on one's overall enjoyment in the long run, it's something you don't even really notice as time goes on. As someone that has played ARPGs for the best part of two decades, whilst I can't speak for everyone, I can at the very least attest to that.

GGG would rather spend the time creating characters and stories they feel are interesting and that they want us to experience, especially when you look at the cultures that exist in Wraeclast. They are heavily inspired by Maori, which of course is very close to GGG, both being of New Zealand.

Thanks for checking out the mod :)

You don't see your character while playing anyway.

This is a really bad argument. I play an ARPG that lets me name my hero I identify as my hero, I always play as male (I'm also a biological male) when I can name my hero or create my hero. This isn't Marvel Heroes where you playing as famous popular characters. These are our avatars, we should have some choice so it represents who and what kind of hero we are. It was the biggest weakness in POE 1 and in Last Epoch, and should not be the standard in this day and age and with a company with the resources as GGG.

Character customization would be cool, just pay for it like any other cosmetics.

I agree. Just let me choose the gender. Oh, you want to play ranger? Sorry, woman only. I payed 28 euros, the game is not bad but this is stupid.

"You don't see your character anyway"

Apart from the hundred times per play session you see your character up close on the inventory screen.

Took a long break from the game and just saw the official huntress reveal.

That is one nasty character model.

Gotta agree with the OP and others on this thread - why not just unlock all of the character models and allow for linking them to a class?

Simple solution, as the complaint from the devs seems to be that 'fully customisable' = too much work, due to armour variants etc.

There is virtually no technical element to unlocking all the current models and assigning a class to them.

Even these AI-generated images of the Path of Exile 2 huntress [epiccarry.com] look a million times better than what they've come up with.

If the human artists are being trounced by an AI, you know something stinks.

Everyone wants their character to look decent, or at least look somewhat close to themselves.

I don't know why they can't unlock a few hairstyles and skin colour picker as well, as that requires no technical effort either and could be completed in a day. No need for a gender changer as I understand that would increase the need for armour variance - these other suggestions would not.

The things modern gamers concern themselves with is absolutely insane. :roguegentleman:

you payed for EA, not for your assumed right of choosing character genders.

I think the people pointing out that, "customization that yields different character silhouettes may be a better investment than fine detail character customization" have a point. That said, I sympathize with those that like fine detail customization.

personally i enjoy the fact that the classes are actual people in the world of the game and have their own personality and voicelines however i do think a character creator would be cool

i'm glad they are considering opening all classes to both genders. as is, half the game is unplayable because i'm not going to make a female character.

That's not a definition of unplayable. You are just unwilling to play a playable portion of the game because you are sexist. :steammocking:

It costs nothing to include a face, hair and skin changer. Even D4 has this and it's a politically indoctrinated AAA studio.

The female characters in particular should look like models. No one cares what the male characters look like - almost 100% of the audience for this genre is men.

MACA (make attractive characters again) needs to happen.

Original D2 had the right idea, in that the sorc and amazon were both attractive, until they 'modernised' them in the D2 remake.

I thought 'modernising' is dead now? Hasn't it collapse half the gaming industry last year and lately even Ubisoft.

Just make them customisable, with the possibility of attractive faces (too late for the bodies, I guess). No one cares about politics anymore in games - it's dead, done and dusted. The phantom minority that used to be offended by attractive feminine models for female game characters aren't making anyone any cash.

So start 'targeting' the rest of us who do.

It doesn't cost them nothing. It costs them development time.
