It is an action rpg, like Diablo or Grim Dawn. This time there are rumors that they might have implemented some dogde and boss mechanics that require somewhat player skills to manage except for just having good armor and weapons. This lead to rumours that it is going to be like the Souls games.
This game is as far away from a souls game as Stardew Valley is to an RTS.
Granted I don't know everything so feel free to let me know what's up.
The bosses are more souls like in the way the mechanics work ,you can dodge. hitboxes look good, 50 bosses , 400 monster types.
A lot of stuff to do in the endgame, sick gear/crafting
I would recommend watching

GGG themselves said they took heavy inspiration from games like Elden Ring for the new combat style and boss fights, so please don't spread misinformation.
It is gonna be a mix. you gonna feel the influence of souls-like titles but it is also still an ARPG.
You will see for yourself on friday
My best guess is people are talking about Souls like because of the dodge mechanic and the very obvious telegraphed attacks from any enemy.
The dodge alone can´t be the reason for that because that would make D4 also a souls like.
Maybe the general look and feel you know?
Idk either tbh, it certainly looks like the most tactical arpg we gonna get ever.
Maybe that´s why.
Or because of the difficulty?
?_?
They were supposed to be useful, but people decided to use them to be funny instead. Which is why you get people slapping "Dating sim" on ARPGs and "Souls-like" on Visual Novels.
The devs have no real control over those tags. If you see a tag that makes no sense it's 100% because some player added and other players voted it up.
Calling it soulslike is utter BS though, they're still very much on the opposite ends of the arpg spectrum.
There's nothing to see. I've been playing PoE for a long time. It's an ARPG in the realm of Hack&Slash & Dungeon Crawling.
Just because a game has a dodge button does not make that game a souls-like.
Game has no stamina based combat.
You don't retrieve lost exp on death. It's gone, and you need to farm it again.
There's nothing cryptic about PoE story.
The third person perspective is super high.
There's a huge talent tree and build combinations.
There's no unforgiving difficulty unless you play HC SSF.
Your character can literally one shot bosses once you finish your build. (If you're good.)
I wouldn't call that particularly challenging.
PoE and PoE2 are easy games compared to souls games.
Well..players of souls-likes are generally more skilled than players of most other genres.. at least mechanically
the average PoE player similarly is also smarter than the average diablo player
Not really a hot take, just a general trend which should be easy to understand
