How is this game a MMO?
I see it listed as a MMO but how? Thought this game was mainly a single player experience.

a turn based game can never be a RTS because RTS means real time strategy...

Just like poe can never be an mmo because it doesn't have a massive persistent world (no a chatbox is not a world).

My point is that it's absurd to call it mmo-lite because that's not an mmo.

People had the exact same discussion 20 years ago with gw1 (that has the same concept, poe got inspired by it, poe devs said it themselves) saying the game was an mmo when the devs themselves said it wasn't and called it a corpg so that people wouldn't label it as mmorpg...

mmo is not wrong BUT but we are used to something else.

massively multiplayer online...
it is correct but feels wrong :D
i feel stupid now, ty!

The concept of the multiplayer in PoE is the same as in Guild Wars 1. Players can only see each other in Hubs like towns, and if they go into the world alone they enter a unique instance, unless they are grouped specifically into a party first.

which is the difference between an mmo and a multiplayer game. For a game to be an mmo, you need all off the maps off the main world to act like a hub. Not just towns. A game with private instances linked to the player initiating the instance can't be an mmo.

Otherwise LoL, Dota and counterstrike can be classified as mmo just because there are a lot of people playing at the same time in closed instances.
...so what you're trying to say is that Guildwars 1 is not an MO, got it ... though I fear that I won't agree on you with that.
genres on steam are mainy driven by people. and people are very smart. thats why :MelvorGolbin:

MMO= Massive Multiplayer Online
It fulfills exactly that.

By this logic, nearly every game ever made is an RPG because you're playing the role of someone or something in a game. Game genres are more nuanced than that, the genre is based off the systems, not the literal definition of the words contained in the genre.

Well, when you look at it, you can sit in town full of ppl and every now and then form group to run a map. Very similar to WoW gameplay, just replace map with dungeon.

So LotRO, FF14 and WoW are not MMOs?

They are mmos. because whole main overworld is not a private instance, it's a persistent one, it's not belonging to a player in particular. poe doesn't have that, you can't enter the map of someone unless you are authorized.
MMO literally just means massive multiplayer online.
Which this very obviously is.
People who try to argue that it isn't, are wrong. Stop being stuck trying to railroad a description to only 1 specific thing, it's stupid and incorrect.

lol massively multiplayer doesn't mean "it's popular"
Cool, nobody said that. Debating something doesn't work when you invent things that never happened.

well, its a massive (failure)
its multiplayer
its online

guess that counts?

lol
MMO is such an abused term by game devs.

Everyone knows what an MMO is. Black Desert, FFXIV, WoW, Wildstar.
