2:13:40 - Click to move vs. WASD

Mark:
"almost every developer and designer, they all back to click to move...yep, it has gone full tilt the other way."

So basically WASD is allready canceled internally.

IMO rightfully so, i played several WASD top down games and the only one which nailed it was Smashmuck Champions.

Now, Smashmuck Champions was a PvP arena brawler..
not a "i grind this 12 hours a day"-game like Path of Exile.

Imo WASD is incredibly unprecise compared to mouse and it adds way to many unnecesarry key strokes to a game where u need to grind hours on end.

They allready removed flasks because it was to much keys and to avoid piano gameplay, but they just replaced it with even more keys.

dodge roll+flasks+spells+wasd
=
15+ keys to press plus manually aim with ur mouse
now imagine doing that 12+ hours a day
it will become tedious.

I will definetly give WASD a try but i allready see myself playing mainly with controller and switch to MnK when doing inventory, menus etc.

or even take the bullet, not beeing able to move and autoattack
and do it like the DEVs and play click to move entirely

thoughts?

Play what's best for you, really that's the only real concern. No one person is going to override the opinion of another. The point that the devs have this as an option in the first place is awesome. Kudos to them.

Does it really matter what control type is "the best" ? People won't agree anyway, and we will all get to try all of them pretty soon :Batcat:

Only thing that comes to mind is playing wow retail, I think I had like 23 buttons, in addition to WASD. Did not even break a sweat... not that it would be a fantastic comparison, but it is pretty much a 24/7 game. You just get used to it, is my guess.
My prot paladin on retail has 45 keybinds i regularly use in mythic+ dungeons (QSERFZXC12345 mouse4 and mouse5, each with ctrl shift and alt modifiers). This post is a joke lol

i haven't played retail for like 3 years but i honestly doubt that there is ANY class in the game that uses 45 keybinds which you use regularly (i dont mean once every 10 or 30 minutes)

if anything WoW reduced its keybinds over the years

but even classic did not had "45 keybinds" even if u'd bind buffs, consumable, petri's etc. plus boss markers

and if i play mythic+ i do focus, i concentrate, i sweat

maybe its just me but when i run maps i wanna eat nachos and netflix

I played PoE 1 with controller (switching when dealing with inventory and such). It was good, not the best with AoE spell but really good for Melee. So yeah, I will stick to controller with this one especially if I stick with a summoner build as controller is really more confortable for me.

WASD is 100 times better in D4 and im sure it will be 100 times better in PoE 2.

D4 has WASD?

yes, but almost noone uses it, so people dont even know it exists to begin with...

I did have concerns about moving while also using skills being a problem, but I have an mmo mouse, so I'll just bind my skills to those side buttons on my mouse. Ff14 did make my wrist hurt when I played it too much because of the side buttons though. So maybe I'll go back to click to move eventually, but definitely going to try wasd first.

I do not know if this has changed but WASD in PoE2 works completely different than anything I have tried before. In that I mean W does not move upwards, S does not move downwards, A and D are not left and right. The way it works is that your mouse controls where you are looking and then W moves your character forwards towards your mouse and S moves the character backwards from your mouse, A and D are sidewards movements with your mouse being where the "front" is. I have not tried it myself but that is how it was explained to me when I asked someone who played the demo at an event. Can someone confirm? Otherwise you would be limited to 8 directions of movement using conventional WASD.

Ya i didn't even know d4 added wasd movement. Wtf lol. I was telling a friend about poe2 having wasd movement, while we were playing d4, and he plays on a controller, so he didn't even know d4 was click to move. Here i didn't even know d4 had WASD.
Idk, for me all dungeon crawlers have been point to move, in fact i try to set it so i can almost always hold left click to force move and if im using either 12345 or qwert for my action skills then i set a s or d as force stop so i can stationary attack/spam skills if necessary. Having force move and force stop as my way of navigation can help avoid attacks and traps too.
