Theorycrafting a Defense-Based Damage Build for PoE2: Could it Work?
Hey guys and girls

I’m trying to explore the possibility of a build that focuses on defensive mechanics to deal damage. For example:
Damage-dealing auras
Support gems that has trigger effects when enemies attack (possibly even when minions are hit)
Thorns-style mechanics or similar damage-reflecting setups

I know the game mechanics for PoE2 aren’t fully revealed yet, but I’m hoping experienced Path of Exile players can share some insights from PoE1. Does a build like this even exist?

Some specific questions I’m wondering about:
Do you think defensive mechanics alone could ever be a viable primary damage source in PoE2?
Are there any mechanics or build ideas in PoE1 that hint this could be possible in PoE2?

With the new addition of shields and a defensive stance, I can’t help but imagine a build where I run around and see monsters—and maybe even bosses—die as they attack me.

What do you think? Could this concept work, or is it just wishful thinking? I'd love to hear your thoughts, theories, or any ideas you might have.

There is defence mechanics in PoE1 what can potentially deal damage, but they generaaly suck damage wise even in early game due to low damage and abysmal scaling (and you don't want to get hit in PoE1 in most circumstances).
Notable exception is wardloop builds which utilises self-damage to trigger CWDT links (cast when damage taken). You can read how it works in details here https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3261066

In terms of PoE2 percent based melee reflect is confirmed, no CWDT support so far.
Devs will probably add more skills (retaliation skills, cast on block, etc.) when they release duelist (and other classes).

P.S. wardloop is expensive build, people start with other build and then respec/create new character later

Thorns damage exists. Armor exists. Retaliation skills will be added. Cast on black will be added. Yeah. Should be supported.

everything is possible, you can go defense heavy build end game, it'll take you to clear maps longer but you'll be very safe. Depends on the difficulty of the maps you are on, you'll make adjusments, you may go more dps while sacrificing some defense if you are feeling a turtle, to increase your clear speed a bit more. Just like that you can balance it on the go dynamicly.

Retaliation/reflect builds might be neat, if you have proper skills, support gems, archtypes, keynodes and uniques to support it. We won't really know for sure until the game is out and we can actually test this stuff.
