I now have two accounts because I tried PoE 1 for like 30 minutes 5 years ago and I forgot about it... What's gonna happen?

So just went through this whole process of setting up my PoE 2 account because I bought Early Access through Steam only to find out that I actually already had an account linked to my Steam account because a long, LONG time ago I wanted to try out PoE 1 (I don't think I ever made it beyond the beach lol).

So I hit the merge button and now, apparently, I have 2 poe accounts merged together. When I log in to the website and go to account overview, I see both of them: oldAccountName#1234, and newAccountName#1234

Obviously I prefer the new account over the forgotten old one.

How does this work? When I download PoE2 and play, will I have to choose which one to play on? If I buy stash tabs, does it go towards only one or both?

I didn't think there was a problem requiring customer support, as it let me merge the two accounts together. I was more just wondering how it works with poe and if I choose one to play as. Like if people will see me identified as my old account name or my new one.

I would expect you are playing with whichever account your steam account is registered with.
You could try with PoE1...

I guess you can choose then. Tbh I didn't play PoE with steam since a long. Using the GGG client, you can select the sub account, so I guess it may be the same then. You should simply try...

If you see both listed it sounds like you have 2 sub accounts.

When you go to play, you can select which sub-account you want to create a character on. And all MTX purchases will either be associated with the sub-account you purchased them on.

If you have MTX on both accounts, then you can ask support to merge your MTX into a single sub-account that you want to use going forward.

Microtransactions purchased on one account will be specifically associated with the sub-account in question. If, however, you want to move all of your purchases to a single sub-account, you can request the PoE support team to do so, although you may only do this once and they’ll no longer be accessible on the sub-account you’ve transferred them from.

So right now you use the account you want, you also contact PoE support if you have anything on the old account you want tranferred to the new one.
