No.
Diablo series is ARPG.
POE is ARPG.
There is no such thing as "diablo-like".
Because there was no genre for that type of play before then.
h&s that followed the diablo formula (top down, realtime, procedural dungeons, generated loot), were called diablo-like after diablo 1 released, because there was no game like it before, dungeon crawlers were the thing, with slow paced gameplay and most of the time in first person view. People actually spoke the term, I heard it and I used it back in early 2000.
Also, diablo-likes are not ARPG, ARPG is too broad of a term (especially these days, cyberpunk 2077 is an ARPG, but it has nothing in common with diablo). The proper term is hack&slash, that what diablo-likes were called back in the day, there was a shift somewhere, I don't know when, nor why, I would put blame diablo 3 for straying away from the formula (it's always gonna diablo 3's fault).
Diablo is an ARPG. It has been since Blizzard used the term to describe Diablo 1. You can keep misusing words, but no one is going to adopt "diablo-like" but you. Because ARPG is the genre for games like Diablo and POE.
As for RPGs misusing the term ARPG, that's a problem, too. But it's at least more accurate and less asinine than "diablo-like"
Incorrect. ARPG has been the correct term since Blizzard first used it when talking about Diablo 1 in an interview back in the 90s.
They were, and still are, called ARPGs.
You don't know because no shift has ever happened.
There was no genre for a game like Diablo before it existed. There were games similar to it, like Rogue-likes, and there were other Action RPGs, but none that had all the elements of a game like Diablo.
Diablo WAS the game that popularized the term ARPG being used for that type of game. It literally spawned the genre.
The funny thing is David Brevik originally planned for Diablo to be Turn-based like a Rogue-like. Blizzard wanted it Real-time, and that's how the modern Diablo was born.
So what you are saying is "diablo-like" is a perfect tag?
And that has never been an accurate tag. There is no role playing in the Diablo-like genre. They're either diablo+likes, loot hunters, or hack-n-spash games.
The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls are closer to being ARPGs.
Other than you hating on diablo and loving poe... is there any other reason you are saying it's better than diablo?
