Not remotely the same. Massive difference; AoC alpha won't give you the game, only access to the alpha. You're still gonna have to buy the game AFTER it.
PoE early access is paid yes, but pretty much everything once it fully releases is free. And not just that, it's not like you lose access to the game after the early access. This is a much fairer system than AoC is doing.
They did this for PoE1 as well, so trying to pretend they're doing it because AoC is doing it is absolutely absurd.
I'd rather have EA be FTP while they are testing and polishing broken strats in the game and when its actually finished i'd gladly pay and play instead of worrying wtf random magical sounding things mean in supporter bundles...
Still i'm going to give the game a shot since the devs seem to play their own game and engage with the community frequently (i'm new to POE games)
