I really want to like this but im starting to wonder...

So this is the 1st visual novel i've picked up. The only real reson I even did is because of Spice and Wolf is so great. But the thing is that despite all the reviews talkign about how great this story is, and the fact that there is a second episode, Im feeling like it's kind of dry. Now I really want to like this story so im gonna read it to the end but I'm just wondering if things pick up at all. Also, I'm wondering if this is an incomplete/censored version of the story because image change ups seem a bit infrequent and there are some times when there is no background at all, is that just me?

There are scenes without backgrounds that's just how it is, there's no 18+ of this game anywhere, as for the story its much like how spice and wolf is its slow in the start (though its not felt much in the anime but it was in the novel).
