Charge, Tracer, Smoke Bomb
Of course you can, I beat the game without ever equipping the smoke bomb.
I'd say the extra hit points are way more valuable than smoke bomb.
Chaser (just like in Gunstar Heroes) is invaluable as it means you're always dealing damage.
Chaser is a noobtube for the most part, lol. Especially with the nerf to damage when taking extra HP.
Plus, extra HP is useless when going for grades (other than Ps).
S-ranking the dragon I found much easier with lobber than charge-shot just so I dont have to lock-aim or use lower-level clouds, outside that though charge-shot all the way.
Smoke-dash is not the only good charm since you can't use it during schmup-bosses (for obvious reasons), so people who do good on run n gun bosses and platform levels, but struggle at schmups will find more use in other charms like +2 health for -10% damage or automatic super meter charging. And that is actually quite a lot of people based on how much I've seen the robot being mentioned as a gamequitting boss.
Also yeah chaser is really bad in the long run. It's nice for people who are bad at the game for the first island and all, but the lack of damage will make island 2 and 3 become A LOT harder if you still use chaser since the bosses take forever to die. Here's the damage-table where you can see even peashooter has TWICE the dps of chaser:

Personally I use it with invincibility as a special for full effect
How is Chaser (a weapon in every run and gun game) a noob weapon?
Also you're not going to be going for S rankings during your first run, so extra HP and weapons with constant (Chaser) or high damage (Charge Shot) should be your top priority when going through your first run.
